Villa Theatre To Become Furniture Showroom?

posted by grantwsmith on October 14, 2003 at 7:54 am

Harmons Grocery has told the Utah Heritage Foundation that they will most likely sell the Villa Theatre in Salt Lake City to a Los Angeles furniture manufacturer that would preserve the theater’s sign and facade, but use the use the interior of the building as a showroom. It is unclear what happened to the sale of the theater to buyer that wanted to convert the theater into a night club.

There is at least one group that would like to buy the theater and restore it to its 1950s glory, but so far Harmons hasn’t given them the chance. It appears that Harmons intends to sell the theater to the first person who has the money and promises to preserve the facade.

If you would like to see the Villa reopen as a theater, please show your support by signing the villatheatre.com guestbook.

While we applaud any plan that preserves the Villa’s facade and marquee, we encourage Harmons Grocery to seriously consider all proposals that would preserve the Villa as an entertainment venue, whether as a nightclub, cinema cafe, etc. The Villa is a true Cinema Treasure and Salt Lake City should find someway to preserve it.

As a prospective nightclub owner, the task of opening a nightclub is a monumental undertaking. You need to sign a rental lease or buy the property outright. You need to pay utilities and taxes. You need to obtain a lot of insurance. You need to hire security and other staff members. You need to get that liquor license.

That last one is a biggie!!

Starting any business requires sound capital and responsible financing prior to beginning the licensing procedures.
