KARLSRUHE, GERMANY — During October 7th – 9th a festival called “50 YEARS OF TODD – AO” will be held at the SCHAUBURG Cinerama cinema in Karlsruhe, Germany.

New 70mm prints of HELLO DOLLY, THOSE MAGNIFICENT MEN IN THEIR FLYING MACHINES, PATTON, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY, THE SOUND OF MUSIC, 2001 – A SPACE ODYSSEY and vintage 70mm prints of RYANS DAUGHTER, MY FAIR LADY and AIRPORT will be shown during the festival.

The SCHAUBURG Cinerama goes back to 1906 and still has the curved screen and the ambiente from the 1960’s, when it was reconstructed to a single lens Cinerama theatre.

All films are shown in the Original English versions, except the vintage prints, which were German dubbed language versions.

This makes me so angry that there is nothing like this in New York. Why are they doing this in Germany of all places? These are American films and almost all of them had their world premieres in Times Square(and Radio City Music Hall.)

I agree. I can’t beleive that they don’t do this in NYC or LA. Ilive in Asheville, NC now so I wouldn’t expect it here. The Ziegfeld of RCMH would be the perfect place to do this.

CONGRATULATIONS Karlsruhe

I’m trying to go and it will be fine that the same happend in Lisbon , a village with 1.000.000 people in the 60s and with 12 cinemas eqquiped with 70mm Todd-AO . The best of all was distroyed during the 80s. It was the MONUMENTAL special adapted to TODD-AO FILMS with SOUTH PACIFIC and THE MIRACLE OF TODD-AO as first exibition. The 2nd one was THE SLEEPING BEAUTY. The huge curved screen had 20m x 8,5 and the hall with stalls and 2 balconys with a total of 1220 places. The copy OF BOTH ,in good conditions are yet in Portugal, in the Museum CINEMATECA PORTUGUESA.

This is the type of programming Pacific/Arclight should be running in the Cinerama Dome instead of half-empty showings of “The Exorcism of Emily Rose”!

Todd-AO? 70mm? Was you there, Charlie? Why isn’t any one talking about or running the two premiere Todd-AO productions; Oklahoma! and Around the World in 80 Days?

The only problem is that I can not obtain any answer from the Theater with the schedule (with hours of course) in mode to plan my trip to aduste the time in accordance with the beginning and the hour of last show. If you have an answer to this question please e-mail me () or send that schedule to this page.

Hallo there,

to all comments about New York etc fair play, but you guys in the states have had more 70mm theatres than any country in the world : so give Germany and Europe a go ! we haven’t got Egyptian theatres on our doorstep.

Anyhows , moving swiftly on : each screening is only 9 euros, or 65 e for the weekend : a bargain !
