The gunslinger of the Old West is an irresistible figure in the history and imagination of the United States. It’s ironic that for much of the last fifty years, the way this seminal American character has been depicted in movies has been heavily influenced by the
mythology of a Japanese icon, the samurai. And the Western itself, arguably the ultimate
American movie form, was largely re-imagined by an Italian director. On May 11 & 12, the Landmark Loew’s will screen three of the greatest films that gave rise to this curious phenomenon:

The Good, the Bad & the Ugly Friday, May 11 at 8PM

Seven Samurai Saturday, May 12 at 2PM

The Magnificent Seven Saturday, May 12 at 8:30PM

See below for more details about each film.

Seven Samurai will be introduced by Mitsuhiro Yoshimoto, author of “Kurosawa: Film Studies & Japanese Cinema”.

As a bonus, there will be demonstrations of Iadio, a formal Japanese martial art, and of
Shodou, or Japanese calligraphy, in the lobby of the Loew’s. Additionally, there will be a
live performance of Shakuhachi, a traditional Japanese flute, before the screening of
Seven Samurai and at intermission.

Local film expert Charles Stanton will give a talk and take audience Q&A about The
Magnificent Seven after its screening.

Each screening is $6 for adults, $4 for seniors & children 12 years old and younger. Combo discounts for two or more screenings are available.

The Landmark Loew’s Jersey Theatre is one of America’s grandest
surviving Movie Palaces, and now operates as a non-profit arts center. The Loews
screens movies on our 50 ft wide x 25 ft high screen, using carbon arc illumination for
the brightest, whitest light. We run reel-to-reel, not platter, which often allows us the screen an archival or studio vault print that is the best available copy of a movie title.

The Loew’s Jersey, located at 54 Journal Square, Jersey City, is
directly across JFK Boulevard from the JSQ PATH Center, is minutes from the N.J. Turnpike and is easily reached by car or mass transit from throughout the Metro Area.

Half-price off-street parking is available in Square Ramp Garage adjoining the Loew’s.
Patrons present a coupon to garage attendant when they leave. Coupon is available at our box office.
