New theater planned for the Kingsbridge Armory

BRONX, NY — The local NYC is reporting that a new theater is planned as part of the just approved retail mall to be located in the former Kingsbridge Armory on Jerome Avenue @ Kingsbridge Road. The developer, The Related Companies, has not yet identified the theater operator, however, in documents filed with NYC, the word “multiplex” is used. This may indicate that National Amusements is the theater operator or maybe the word multiplex is just being used in a generic sense as people say “Xerox” instead of the word photocopy.

The same developer, The Related Companies, had also planned a development known as “Plaza at the HUB” to be located on Westchester Ave @ Third Avenue, also in Da' Bronx. A 14 screen, 3565 seat, 122, 915 thousand square foot theater was planned. It too, was written up as a “multiplex cinema”. The NYC Environmental Assessment Study ( Google it) has a nice rendering on it’s cover page of the theater, plus a street level schematic diagram located further into the document.

Kingsbridge square footage is 57,485 sq feet, but no seat count is divulged.

I believe National Amusments is the theater operator in both of these projects, as they seem to have found great success throughout the Bronx where other chains have foolishly avoided. Will the keep or sell their lease options???? time will tell…

Good point – N/A has apparently pulled out of a proposed theater in Brockton, MA, however I know the chain has a location planned for Yonkers and plan to keep 44 theaters (which would include MA, CT, RI, NY and I presume NJ as their Edgewater Multiplex, close enough to NY continues to do well). While they’ve opened Showcase branded sites, their focus has been more on Cinema de Lux and they haven’t opened any “Multiplex Cinemas” in 6-7 years.

John,

Some published reports say that Redstone is only keeping 28 theaters in NY and MA. I heard the location planned for Yonkers, Ridge Hill, has been withdrawn. Ridgehill.com has an aerial picture of it, it is located at the bottom of the page against the large wooded area. There are also well placed reports that they ( and Burger King) are being pushed out of their Cross County, Yonkers location because the landlord wants to upscale the entire shopping center. There was talk that Regal was to take over their lease. Not sure if that is still true, but they originally planned to transition the Cross County location to the Ridge Hill up the road. That development won’t open until 2011.

AMC has a movie theater in the Bronx, called Bay Plaza 13, which used to be a General Cinema. That theater was probably the only theater in NYC to bear the GCC logo until AMC took over. That theater does well.
