The very first shopping center theater: Stamford, CT or Seattle, WA ?????

Read in the postings for the Ridgeway, Stamford, CT that it opened in the summer of 1951 as America’s first shopping center theater, yet similar comments for both Northgate, Seattle, WA and Cinema Shopper’s World in MA claim that same distinction, yet both opened a few months after the Ridgeway.

Can anybody clarify any of this??

    Thanks

    Connellee Theatre..?

Greetings. I was walking along Spring Street, not far from the Historic Theatres of Broadway in downtown L.A., when I grabbed a free CD with pictures of historic theatres. The shots are great, but none of them are labelled. I recognized many local venues, but there was on in particular that I cannot find on our site. It is the Connelle Theatre (once I figure out how to upload the two pics, I will post them).

Does anyone have informatiion on this theatre? Thanks.

50 years ago at Port Richmond’s Clearfield Movies

PHILADEHLPHIA, PA — 50 years ago at Port Richmond’s Clearfield Movies: 6 films, 20 movie stars, 1 dish, and $1.50 add up to an entertaining week. Today, there aren’t any places a movie goer could go to see 20 established movie stars for $1.50 and get a free dish to boot.

However, if you attended the Clearfield Movies during the week before Thanksgiving, 1957, you were successful in doing so.

On Sunday, November 17, the likes of Gene Kelly, Dorothy Dandridge, and Barbara Laage starred in The Happy Road and Rory Calhoun, Anne Francis, with Vince Edwards played in The Hired Gun.

Do you remember seeing Return of the Jedi in the theater in ‘83?

I used to always get in the argument that, culturally-speaking, the release of “Jedi” was significant. I want to do a limited run (50 – 100) ‘zine of recollections from people who saw Jedi back in 1983, in the theater.

If anyone likes the idea, wants to submit a thing, has a question, let me know through .

    Peerless memories

BROOKLYN, NY — My father’s drycleaner/tailor shop was at 437 Myrtle and as a kid hanging out at dad’s store, I would be given 75 cents to get out of his hair for a couple of hours at the Peerless Theater two doors down.

The building and the interior are today exactly as they were in the early 1960’s when the theater was open for business. Today the interior is even better than it was then because everything is well painted and maintained. The marquee was taken down in the late sixties as I recall, and the front doors were replaced at that time.

The people who lived upstairs had no sound problem because the seats and the screen were actually in a separate building that was 75' down a 20 foot wide entranceway that also housed the ticket booth (on the right side). This area immediately behind the front doors was ostensibly for holding the throngs waiting for the next “sell out show.”

    Questions on United Artists theatre?

DARIEN, CT — Was curious if anybody has information on the United Artists Theatre. Noticed it listed in the UA Westchester County listings as eastern Connecticut’s exclusive run of “Airport” in May of 1970. Unusual, as Stamford theaters usually did the exclusive area engagements in Fairfield County back then.

Was it a 1960’s shopping center theater or an older house from way back?

    Thank You Much.

    Meridian Theatres

    Hello Again.

I’d like to thank everyone who gave input on my previous post “Village Entertainment vs. Classic Cinemas.” Now I have another topic that I’d like input on.

I vaguely remember about 10 years ago that there was a cinema chain in the Metropolitan Chicago area called Meridian Theatres. As I recall, the chain did not last long at all. Could my fellow Cinema Treasures fans enlighten me on the following:

Closed Circuit Telecasts: Later shown in 35MM format?

Noticed a microfilm newspaper ad for the 1970 closed circuit in theater telecast of Ali vs. Joe Forman. Weeks later in ads for “The Savage is Loose” some theaters were also showing a filmed version of the same Ali vs. Forman boxing match.

So was it common for some closed circuit telecats to be struck on to 35MM film for more showings? Or maybe this was a separate film made during the fight itself unrelated to the telecast ?

    Thank You Much.
