The end is near for this building. Walked by last week, peeked in through the boarded-up entrance, and its interior is being gutted in advance of demolition.
Likely, according to an out-of-state film exhibitor who won some of its seats, screens and stereo speakers at auction last fall, to be replaced by an apartment building.
Wow. This closed,and in an article regarding Regal closings across the country with Union Square regal mentioned in that list to close,I doubt they will find a new tenant. Landmark doesn’t seem in any hurry to expand,and they’ve let thier Ritz 5 in Phila go to seed. Unsettling times in the exhibition business.
This would be the perfect spot for a new Landmark Theaters. Especially after the loss of the Sunshine Cinema.
I meant to say it certainly would NOT be AMC or regal taking over this movie theater.
I wonder if the state attorney general is that interested in this matter, especially since she currently has bigger fish to fry…
I doubt AMC because it owns Loews Cineplex and Loews had to sell it to Clearview because of monopoly rules
Landlord looking for a new exhibitor? I don’t know who would come in to take over this Theatre. Maybe someone would. Certainly will be AMC or regal. Time will tell if someone comes along and runs it

I saw The Broken Hearts Club there in September 2000 whemn I visited NYC
Just paid my respects to a theatre that I have been coming to since the early 90s. I would spend many of Saturday nights, as a teenager paying for one film and sneaking into numerous more.
Once the new management dropped the Hedda Lettuce classic film series, the Chelsea cinemas was dead to me.
AMC Dine In is now you put the order in at the stand and they deliver it to your seat and the next Manhattan that probably close is E-Walk. Other locations like Battery Par was never a high profitable theatre either.
This is unfortunate. They had very comfortable seats and good size screens. Unfortunately they did not have waiter service. Like Alamo Drafthouse and some AMC locations. So you had to get up and get your food missing part of the movie. Also people complain that the food came out lukewarm. 9 screens gave a lot of choices for people. I doubt any other operator will take over the business and open the theater again. What will be the next Manhattan movie theater location to close this year I wonder. Maybe the regal ewalk in Times Square,
@Seth Lewis - There’s the AMC sixplex at Broadway and 19th, but that, of course, is a bit of a hike from 8th and 23rd.
This very sad, saw a lot of films their when it was Cineplex Odeon, went their when it was Clearview, Bow Tie and Cinepolis. 3 major renovations and another one closes
This is really sad…Manhattan will be seriously under-screened soon.
I am old enough to remember Cavanagh’s - my dad oversaw it when Longchamps took it over in the 1970’s
This was a Cineplex Odeon new build that opened in 1989 and slick for its time. No screens now between Union Square and Penn Station?

I was here for Tribeca FF – nice new recliners but they don’t recline all that far back, ultimately they didn’t loose much. The two smaller houses on Floor 2 had two back rows of stadium seating and the rest were just tiered. They also gave the auditoriums new acoustic treatments, carpeting and it appears they lowed the screens to a more comfortable height (Bow Tie had them up very high – about 10ft off the ground) and added masking.
I wish Cinepolis would get around to remodeling Parsippany – the quality of the experience has gone downhill since they acquired that theatre (they claimed they were going to renovate it into a dine-in theatre in 2018…. they’ve barely fixed the broken seats and exit lights falling off the wall).
Cineaplis had started the fourth renovation of this theatre. Now getting new recliners. Level 2 is now complete, now their working on Level 3.
This is the only theatre in its 28 year history to go thru 4 renovations. Clearview Cinemas in the late around 1999, Bow Tie Cinemas in 2014 and now Cineapolis in 2018. I posted a couple of photos of the new redesigned theatres.
The two obvious reasons BowTie would sell are either the theater wasn’t doing the business they were hoping for (someone who came to this theater more often than me could probably say if the renovations led to a big increase in attendance), or Cinepolis' offer was too attractive to pass up.
It could be Cinepolis was interested in trying to get into the Manhattan market (plenty of exhibitors are) and probably easier to make a deal with BowTie than a mega chain like Regal or AMC.

i saw Me Before You here a few weeks ago. i’m assuming the deal was already in the works at the time. the question i have is simple- with all the $$$ Bow Tie put into renovating the theater and updating the projection and sound in the auditoriums why would they sell?
Went here tonight, and it’s clearly in a transition period. The Bowtie signage outside was gone, with just a simple Cinepolis banner in its place, and the Cinepolis logo was used before the movie, but the ticket and seats still bore the Bowtie logo. Concessions seemed no different than under Bowtie, but that may be updated in the future.
Overall, never been really impressed with this theater, not a convenient location for me, screens on the smaller size, and masking either not used or properly set up, though the theater is notable to me as being the first in NY with digital projection when it played An Ideal Husband in Summer 1999.
