Always enjoy reading about this DeAngelis designed theatre and seeing its original art deco interior which is so much like my former theatre, the Grand Theatre in Westfield NY. I hope to visit this theatre this summer.
This closed theatre was briefly featured on InSession during the Jerry Sandusky trial. One of the reporters stood in front of the theatre by the doors and mentioned its history to the town.
I made the trip to Canandaigua and I can confirm that this theatre is no longer off Main Street in that quaint and charming lake community. I did learn there is a performing arts center though I didn’t see it.
And the description should be changed from “closed” to “demolished”.
Joe: Thanks for adding this theatre to CT. I read the Winship article and hope to meet Michael while I’m in Canandaigua on Thursday.
I plan to travel to Canandaigua on Thursday to see the town and where The Playhouse once stood.
I love the vitrolite that is still on the art deco exterior of this theatre!
Mike: Thanks…looking forward to seeing an early photo. Many times the current business still has artifacts from when it was a theatre such as the projection room “windows” and slanted floor, etc. Have friends in Enid (Sue and Ken Reeves).
The photo shows an open piece of land with no building so has it been demolished? Mike’s comment reads “the front of the building today has been completely covered with a facade.”
Jim: Thanks so very much for your detailed report. I only hope that the new owner restores the building! I have walked through many theatres and a good companion is a good working flashlight and a good tour guide. Thanks again!
Today is May 24th, auction day! Hope to read a post about it soon! Thanks to any CT member who was there!
Thank you so much. Glad to hear the roof work is complete and that you will soon start on the front of the building. Was the Dattola designed by Michael DeAngelis as I see the familiar round circle designs on the exterior?
tomfurey: The Dattola Theatre website doesn’t seem to work! Help!
Joe: Your boxoffice post on December of 2009 is not providing the information. Help and thanks!
What is the current status of the Dattola?
I have found the photos and find them to be very upsetting. The roof should never have been allowed to deteriorate to its present condition! You can see that the former opera house was a “treasure” at one time. My thoughts will be on that auction come Thursday. Wish I were closer to Binghamton than 200 miles!
General: Thanks for your informative reply. I do hope that the auction is successful with a motivated buyer! Keep us posted with the auction being May 24th.
generalenigma: How is the Riviera Theatre listed on the site you posted on 12/18/10?
Paul: Unfortunately, I won’t be there so please post photos of the event on CT or send to my email (
Going to see the musical Charlotte’s Web on June 2. Can’t wait to see this restored theatre in the heart of the Allentown area of Buffalo.
JPaul: Love the flickr photos that show off the fabulous art deco exterior. The May 24th concert should be a “blast from the past”! Congrats to everyone involved in saving this “cinema treasure”!
Any interior photos?
And does this theatre now have an organ? Former CT member, Lost Memory tells us it had a Beman organ.
