Hello-

to markp thanks for your reply. as I said the screening at the Cinema 1 was at the absolute most 20% full. so when I see a film on the opening weekend and the theater isn’t very full and then I hear it had a huge opening weekend I say to myself “where?”.

You should be in the projectionists hall of fame mark. You always take good care of the prints and the studios want them as clean as possible so that they come in handy if the master print is damaged due to weather or fire as was the case with the Universal Hollywood fire years ago which consumed some film reels; luckily Universal had them on digital backup.

alpinedownhiller thanks again. When I ran H8 and Dunkirk at the Regal E Walk for almost 3 weeks each, as well as Murder on The Orient Express for 4 weeks and Phantom Thread for 11 weeks at this theatre, all the prints went back dirt free and scratch free. Its what I do.

Another 2001 achievement: it’s been re-released so many times, from exclusive showings in the big cities to nationwide runs, that it’s effectively been in an off-and-on theatrical release for the past 50 years.

Recently got interviewed there at LS13 for a crew level position (didn’t get the job, drats) but was able to ask about eta on Dolby from a higher up. Nothing super concrete, but says hopefully end of September! Now to renew my crusade!

The Fathom/TCM screening events are very cool too. I saw Jaws, North by Northwest, The Ten Commandments, and just recently West Side Story. But 2001 is still in a class by itself. It’s been in almost continuous release all summer, since the middle of May. In NYC it played 8 weeks at the Village East Theater, in its initial 70mm run. After that it played in NJ (thanks, markp) and Astoria, Queens. Now it’s in IMAX. It’s had a longer run in 2018 than some brand-new movies.

Having just returned from a front-row viewing of the 70mm IMAX version, I have to give it the edge over the digital. This is based solely on how easy it was to read the buttons in the space pod. Every one of those buttons has a label on it, and they were easier to read in 70mm. The level of small details that were put into every facet of that film is astounding. It really is like no other.

On the way out I met a couple who came all the way to New York City from Boston just to see 2001 at this theater, on that screen.

@markp – yeah it was great, you kept the print top notch too, I heard talk of dirt and scratches and so on at some other theaters 70mm showings, the Paramus one, even when we saw it quite a few days into the run, was pristine and great

But they have been showing lots like that in fairly wide release, mostly Sun/Wed pairings. Just over the last few years I’ve seen: South Pacific, 2001, West Side Story, Labyrinth, Carousel, Vertigo, Big, Grease, Titanic, Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, Bladerunner, Singin' In The Rain, The Lion King, The Godfather, Across The Universe, The Princess Bride, Bonnie And Clyde, Fast Times At Ridgemont High, The Spy Who Loved Me, For Your Eyes Only, The Fifth Element, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Back To The Future Trilogy, Terminator 2, Terminator, North By Northwest, Dirty Dancing, Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade, Breakfast At Tiffany’s, Pretty In Pink, Home Alone, Jaws, E.T., The Breakfast Club, Ghostbusters (1984), Raiders Of The Lost Arc, Goonies, Sleepless In Seattle, Groundhog Day, Sixteen Candles, Top Gun 3D, Star Wars Episode I 3D, Wizard Of Oz 3D, Jurassic Park, The Sound Of Music, Wizard Of Oz and more great ones….

alpinedownhiller, thank for your kind words about the 70MM showing at Paramus. I took great pride in setting up those lights the proper way. My partner and I made sure it was done right, just like in 1968.

@Bill Huelbig “Can’t believe it’s in 350 theaters across the US. What other 50-year-old movie could accomplish that?”

It is pretty awesome to see stuff like that.

One thing though, check out the Fathom Events Classics series, it’s a lot more 30,40,50 year old movies that have been getting as wide of a release.

Just saw South Pacific today at the Rockaway on a nice big 55' screen and it was amazing. Everything look amazing, good black levels, rich colors, very crisp and sharp, perfect audio. Fantastic presentation.

And this is one that really seems like you’ve never even seen the movie before it plays so differently on the big screen. It felt like it was the first time I had ever seen it.

Films of this sort just have to be seen on the big screen.

And it awesome it was on #16, one of the largest non-IMAX/Dolby screens around (heck, I think it is at least as large as the Clifton IMAX).

I saw 2001 at Paramus in 70mm a couple months ago and then at the Rockaway, NJ IMAX the other day.

Definitely impressive to see this on the big screen for the first time! Almost like a new movie.

The 70mm film was really cool, cool to see film again and 70mm is nice and crisp. I felt it did have a little more detail, some fairly noticeably so, at times compared to the digital IMAX. The 70mm also had the lights all running and set properly. Even the digital one did run it the full way though with the full intermission and the post credits music, something I’ve heard that almost all showings other than a few of the 70mm ones at some theaters earlier this year, so that was good.

The Rockaway, NJ IMAX screen was bigger so that was cool. The colors looked pretty rich here too, a few times maybe a touch more for the 70mm versions, but generally it was pretty good for the digital IMAX regarding that too. Maybe a few 70mm things had a bit better shadow detail, hard to say. The 70mm for our liking the best seats with the way that theater was designed had us sitting at a lower level relative to the screen than at the IMAX so the screen was a bit higher up which feels a bit more impressive. The volume at the Paramus seemed too loud but it was beyond too loud at the IMAX, even with earplugs that transmission tone and some other stuff make you cringe. The Rockaway IMAX was a bit more rumbly, felt the bass more but also I think too much upper bass which left it a touch boomy at times compared to the Paramus 70mm showing. But still all impressive and a great see on a huge screen.

The 70mm was special. Both were great though. The Rockaway screen is nearing as big as the old Paramus Stanley Giant too and the if you see it at the Paramus IMAX or Jersey Gardens IMAX the screen will be at least as big and I think even a trace bigger than the old Stanley Warner giant.

Of course the most most version is probably the IMAX film version at the insanely huge screen at Lincoln here.

bigjoe59, my wife and I went to the Cinemark in Hazlet NJ last night to try to see this movie. They had it on 2 screens, and all shows were sold out. Ended up at AMC Jersey Gardens, where they also had it on 2 screens. Our theatre had about 150 seats of which at least half, if not more were full.

Continuing on my “2001” adventure. On Aug 26 I gave my review of viewing the 70mm film version at Lincoln Center. The focus/detail was incredible but the sound was ONLY from the screen. This morning I tried my best to enjoy the “restored” digital version at Kips Bay. I didn’t!!!! First, the sound was 100% better than the sound at Lincoln Square. It did lift me out of my seat and sonically placed me in the images. Bless von Karajan BUT, there was at times, and usually during the BEAUTIFUL space dead silence, very loud rumbling and bass sound-bursts from a nearby theater. Terrible!!
The presentation I saw, as the theater manager informed me.. in digital format.. was a great disappointment in the screen clarity. I would say there was a 10 to 15% loss in clarity over the film I watched at Lincoln Center. It was enough to make most of the effects look like effects. Sad!!

I waited until INTERMISSION appeared on the screen and waited for the lights to come up. THEY DIDN'T!! So, I calmly made my way out from my center seat and proceeded down the steps to the exit. Still .. no lights. So. I announced to the dark auditorium (about 30 persons) that I had seen the film on Sat and there might be a 15-20 minute intermission and that I would tell the manager on my way out. A lady followed me out and thanked me.

I asked for the manager and met him at the front desk. Told him of the theater sitting in the dark and he mentioned that “Oh, that happened on the weekend and people had come down to report it thinking the projection had a problem!!” I asked him if he could turn the lights on.. and he went up to see if they were still in the dark. He did mention he thought that it might be a built-in effect to keep in audience in outer space??? Left the theater very disappointed. Very glad I saw the film presentation at Lincoln Center.

Yep… I’m very particular!!! But I want to help everyone get what they pay for!! I’m concerned this digital version is NOT as awe-inspiring as the original. We can do better than this!!!!!!!

I can’t wait to preorder this on google play since i own the Itunes version that is based on the 2007 HD master used for the bluray release. It’s worth watching i tell ya. As for the Dark knight, the DVD release of the two disc set has the imax scenes in its imax ratio on disc 2 of the set, while the bluray shows the cropped image used for the digital imax release. the bluray of batman begins has the dark knight prologue in its imax format.

Maybe it was because I sat in the front row for the digital edition. Level of detail was excellent in both versions.

I did notice another change in digital: the last shot of the Russians sequence, which for 50 years ended in a fade to black, is now a cut to black. I don’t know why changes like this have to be made, or if there’s any reason for them. The 70mm version has the advantage in this regard.

“I just saw the digital version in Clifton, NJ. It was quite beautiful. You could easily see all the incredible details in so many scenes. For example, the dinner recommendation on the wall of the kitchen on the Jupiter ship included roast beef, mashed potatoes, blueberry pie and coffee. I had never been able to read that before.”

All the IMAX screens are just 2k though not 4k unless you are talking a laser one/one of the few that can play IMAX film. Wouldn’t it show less detail than the 70mm print just played at say Paramus a few months ago?

Hi Bill, I saw 2001 on Friday at the Kips Bay. While I had seen the film quite a few times before, I had never seen it theatrically before and getting the extra detail and richness of color than you could find in home viewings was a pleasure. I didn’t notice anything off in that sequence you mentioned, but did notice a few shots which looked poor in the film, didn’t distract from about 98% of the movie looking great (and I figured if anything there could be issues inherent in the source elements of those shots).

Also saw The Dark Knight at this theater tonight, and even as good as 2001 it couldn’t quite compare (though I had seen the film in a regular screen theatrically when it first came out, and again a number of times at home since). A bit of dust and I noticed a hair in one shot, but this was either a new or very well preserved print, did notice a few seconds of shakiness twice (in the opening scene and Hong Kong sequence) which may have just been with this screening, but otherwise the image was rocksteady, the native IMAX footage was of course the jaw dropping highlight, but even the 35mm DMR material had some incredible looking images. Like 2001, there were no trailers (makes sense, 2001 is being done in roadshow format, and what 15/70 IMAX trailers would be available) in both cases I think a couple audience members were expecting those and didn’t get in till around 15 minutes into the films.

No trailers before the 70mm version or the digital version. There was an IMAX promo before the digital version, announcing they were going to show what will be coming soon in IMAX, but it led right into the overture of 2001.

They should show a 5/70MM version at the Regal E Walk across the street from the Empire. FILM.
