just came after a 2:10 showing of Wanted, and it was without some faults. The only fault was that the guy printed the wrong showtime, which already started!!! Must be a young worker working behind the office, as the theater was packed with Wall*E fans waiting to see that movie, which will be #1. Don’t forget that WarGames is coming back to Rockaway after it first came out at the old Rockaway theater back in the 1980’s. The sound was kicking and the projection was good, some splices during the film that didn’t detract from the presentation. Parking was almost full due to the bad weather. Since the entrance to the theater was packed, me and my family exited elsewhere.

just checked out the advance tickets for the rockaway and for the first time this theater will host an NCM event. Glenn Beck, a conservative TV host best known for his short lived tv show on Headline News, will host Beck ‘08 (no relation to the singer) on the same day as the Dark Knight movie. It will be projected using the same format as the digital preshow. As for that other movie, it won’t be shown in IMAX as originally planned; looks like I have to head to Palisades Center or Lincoln Square to watch the Dark Knight the way it’s supposed to be seen.

I can’t wait for Rockaway to get IMAX, even though installation won’t begin until next year just in time for Avatar, James Cameron’s long awaited return to mainstream cinema.

Went with my aunt to see what will probably be Adam Sandler’s lowpoint of his career…that Zohan movie. It was playing in theater 12, still with the right front channel out but all four channels plus the subwoofer were working good. The projection was a bit blurry at the beginning with “The Rocker” trailer, but by the next trailer, it was a bit sharper. Not only that, but some of the titles on screen emited some glows around the letters. Also, the picture was somewhat cut off by misplaced framing, mostly to the left of the screen as AMC prefers showing it movies in a ratio simliar to HD (1.78 as opposed to 1.85) for matte films.

That was in 2002, the same year that the old Rockaway theater was closed.

check out the wiki for mr. winston. He leaves behind a studio that will still work, just like after jim henson’s death that his company still worked.

he died two days after Tim Russert died. I guess he was a movie fan, not to mention a fan of the Bills and democrats. What did he die of? I’ll probably check wikipedia to read about him. His studio will live on. Next up, Ray Harryhausen, and some of the old timers from ILM and in the future, Digital domain.

some people think the movie will have less talk than other pixar movies, with the only speech being the robot’s bloops and bleeps. But I think it will do good business as other pixar movies have done in the past. This is the second Pixar movie to be played at the Rockaway theater but not the first time in town. Cars played at this theater during a free preview, and Monsters Inc was the last pixar movie at the old theater before it closed shop. Pixar movies are supposed to be seen in DLP, since its computer animated. I’m not sure if Rockaway will show Wall*E in DLP or just plain 35mm.

Advance ticketing is now avaible for “Wanted” and “Hancock”, both regular 35mm presentations. No advance ticketing for Wall E yet until tomorrow night, as that movie might be Pixar’s first bomb. Still dissapointed that IMAX in Rockaway will have to wait until after Xmas.

btw, I still have the vhs version of the first JP at my dad’s house, as well as the vhs version of its sequel, which had a nice Mercedes Benz promo since the new SUV made its debut in that movie (talk about cross promotion!!!) and the third one on DVD (in Full Screen and in Dolby and DTS)…can’t wait for a Blu-Ray trilogy release now that Universal has ditched HD-DVD for Blu-Ray!!!

I first saw Jurassic Park 1 on VHS, the second one twice at the Loews in Wayne (now equipped with DTS after its renovations back in Thanksgiving of ‘96 and seeing it first with my family and second with the teen fun club of the boys and girls club) and the third one once at the Clifton Commons with Dolby Digital Surround EX equipped and in one of the non-THX auditoriums. I also sneaked in to see the end of the movie while waiting for another movie to begin that summer. Can’t wait to see JP4 at the AMC in Rockaway come 2009!!!

the closure of the rialto leaves the loews in ridgefield park as the only choice of going to the movies in that area.

Out of all those movies, Scent of a Woman was the most popular…too bad Universal didn’t show it in DTS. By late 1997, Universal would release all of their movies in the three digital surround sound formats, and would soon release DTS versions of the films on DVD (and soon Blu-Ray), and Dolby Digital Plus versions on HD-DVD, which Universal supported for awhile until its discontinuation this year.

I read on NJ’s movies forum, that on the monday after the Zohan movie came out, there was a power outage in that area that affected the theater. Thankfully it was back on but soon that nasty storm came by and knocked clifton without power for awhile, affecting this theater and clifton commons.

When I went to this theater to see “Iron Man”, one of the stools in the bathroom was out of order. By the time “Indy 4” came out, it was fixed!!! Kudos to the theater’s staff for fixing issues like this, but not the projection and high ticket prices, not to mention high popcorn and soda prices, so high, that I might sneak in my own food!!!

FYI, the DTS version of JP played only in a smaller theater in Wayne, the quad (before Clearview took over) by UA. Vallyview Cinemas didn’t show this movie as they had mono equipment. The one thing that I liked about the movie when I was young was a short cartoon that played inside the museum about DNA and dinosaurs. Who animated that cute cartoon? BTW, Jurassic Park mania reached its peak with the sequel, and when the third one came out, it was overkill, and another sequel will soon come out in 2009.

moviebuff82 commented about After 30 years, GREASE is still the word! on Jun 14, 2008 at 1:31 pm

I first saw Grease while I was at middle school, and I liked it. The songs were catchy, and the actors were pretty good. My favorite star from the movie was Olivia Newton-John. At some of the dances I went to, they play “Greased Lighting”, as well as the mega-mix which came out a year before the re-release of the movie (the second, following one in 1989), which my cousin Chrissy attended. The only change was that the paramount logo was replaced with the current one (both with their own fanfares). It would be fun to see Grease on Blu-ray!!!

The timing of the IMAX system two years after the theater opened is a good thing. Usually it takes two years for a new theater to get good box office, and that encourages companies to install digital systems in the theaters. Clearview was lucky to install digital projection in nearly all of its newer theaters first with the Real D deal that began back in March of last year with “Meet the Robinsons” and quickly expanded earlier this year as the box office was up during the 1Q of this year. Now that attendance is finally up from last year (due to a lot of good summer movies and the record heat that is now gone), IMAX is slowly rolling out its projection system in a few cities and will complete it by 2009, which is when Avatar comes out.

moviebuff82 commented about Wayne Movietown on Jun 11, 2008 at 8:21 am

if memory serves me right, this theater was one of the first theaters to get DTS installed just in time for Jurassic Park 15 years ago this day. The Loews in Wayne didn’t get it, since it preferred playing it in Dolby Stereo and was ordering a rival system, SDDS. My dad and stepmom went to the smaller theater just to hear those dinosaurs roar loud and clear!!! When the sequel came out in 1997, the Loews had DTS, not to mention SDDS but not Dolby Digital, which it would later install as SDDS became less popular at the turn of the 21st century.

moviebuff82 commented about Director: Blu-ray offers better pix than theater on Jun 11, 2008 at 8:17 am

i have a 32 inch Sony HDTV (CRT) and watching movies at home on my PS3 (Blu Ray and upscaled DVD) and on cable is better than watching a blurry screen at my nearby movie theater in Rockaway with the loud surround sound. Not only that, I can pause the movie anytime I want with a bluray and do stuff that you can’t do in the movies!!!
