The 2011 Tony Award Show is coming from the Beacon tonight and it is an awesome theatre..thanks to the television crew for featuring its beauty with their wide angle shots.
With the plans for a Winter Garden plaza by the JRC (Jamestown Renissance Corporation) the former Winter Garden will be remembered. I have suggested to them that an historical plaque be put at the plaza eventually.
Just returned from visiting the Star and can report back that the original chandelier is still hanging from the ceiling in the auditorium! They even had balloons and a birthday cake in the lobby to commemorate the theatre’s opening on this date 90 years ago!
Is the original chandelier still hanging from the ceiling? Will be passing through that town this weekend though won’t have time for a tour enroute to Conesus Lake.
I hope Mount Dora gets their Princess Theatre back someday. I plan to call Main Street Leasing that is now located at the former theatre site and speak with someone about my concerns.
The former Princess Theatre is now owned by Main Street Leasing. The number is 352-735-0334 if you want to inquire about returning it to the Princess Theatre again!
Unfortunately, this show had to be canceled but you can still see this fantastic disco sound group perform on the floating stage in Bemus Point NY on September 4th with fireworks after the show. I’ve been told by the curator of the Jimmy Stewart Museum, Tim Harley that the movie It’s A Wonderful Life starring Mr. Stewart is featured each November at the Indiana Theater.
Would love to see vintage photos of this theatre at both locations in Avon. Did it ever have a vitrolite exterior of that era? Vitrolite were colored glass panels and the term can be found via a Google search.
I recently met a gal who travels through Ridgeway PA from NJ on a monthly basis and she told me there is a commemorative plaque where the Strand once stood on the corner of Main and N. Broad. Very nice.
This theatre still has its exterior design. Wonder why keeping it a theatre wasn’t preserved and wonder if there is a effort “afoot” to return the Princess Theatre to the citizens of Mt. Dora?? Hope so!

This one is an art deco beauty! Would like to see it next winter while visiting friends in Mt Dora.
I have toured this 1929 theatre and told about and saw the concrete stilts over the Ohio canal.
This theatre is marked as closed and it has been demolished.

And Dansville is the original home of Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross.
