The final two films booked into the Olympia were ‘Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets’ and Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Tarkovsky’s ‘Solaris’.
I saved a chunk of the theater and have on dsplay in my store MOVIE PLACE 237 W. 105th Street.
yes it’s true they used to keep them open during the intermission and close and open them right before the presentation for what reason I don’t know. Now during the intermission they show slides like most modern multiplexes. Those large golden curtains don’t move at all now. They probaly close them with special engagements like premieres or exclusive re-issues
When Golden had this theatre they quaded it. I can attest to how great it looked when Cineplex first opened it, it was done top notch as were all their theatres at the time. This was when Garth Dravinsky was spending money like it was water aquiring thatres and giving them the marble and neon treatment. Is it true whats written above that Clearview does not open and close the curtains in Thje Zeigfeld? I have not been there for awhile.
The new apartment high-rise – which, despite some rumors to the contrary, won’t include a new movie theatre among its retail tenants – for which the Olympia site was cleared is currently under construction.
A great theatre. I saw Titanic there in 1997. Very wide screen. The seats in the upper theatre where on a very steep incline. It was almost like stadium seating.
nothing exist of this theatre buiding as of now but the shell of the new hi-rise being built. This was one of my favorite theatres it remindinded me of a minature version of the National twin downtown in Times Square minus the long escalator ride up stairs. theatre 1 was too small but theatre2 boasted , well to me a bigger auditorium and screen. for a short time after it’s last restoration around 1987 the curtains opened and closed before each presentation then when they changed hands to Clearview that stopped just like it did at the Zigfeld. why do Clearview do this to theatres.
During the 50’s the Olympia Theatre was operated by the Loews Theatres and before the twinning it seated 1162 people.
That’s disappointing. I took some night shots of the Olympia in December, just weeks before it closed. I’ll post them when I get a chance.
There goes another perfectly viable theatre.
the site will be utilized by nearby Columbia University and a high rise will soon take over the land.
I drove by the site about a week ago and, sadly, it is now a fenced in hole in the ground.
The building is located on Broadway at 107th street.
Closed 12/19/2002 for good.
