The CITGO sign sits atop 660 Beacon, which was originally built as an automobile showroom. The entire strip of Comm. Ave. from here to Allston used to be full of car dealers.

The AMC Fenway megaplex is just a few blocks away from BU.

So I guess BU has gone along with the trend of its university bookstore getting absorbed by B&N. Hmh. At least Fenway Park is still there. And the Citgo sign still beams its red triangle of light down onto the snogging student bodies.
Anyone know where BU kids go to the movies these days?

That cannot be correct. As Alan Karr posted above, this theater is now the BU Barnes & Noble, and that bookstore’s address is 660 Beacon Street.

In the late 1970s, both this theater and Park Square were owned by Justin Freed, who ran primarily repertory programming. Their monthly schedules, distributed widely around the city, were quite elaborate productions.

He closed both the Kenmore Square and Park Square shortly after buying the Coolidge Corner.

I think that was where all us BU kids saw Bonnie and Clyde and immediately morphed from 60s hippies to raffish 30s gangsters, which was obviously much cooler and more fun.

I saw many imports there during the 60s. Several that come to mind are THE SILENCE by Bergman, Fellini’s 8 ½, Petri’s THE TENTH VICTIM, Jacobsen’s A STRANGER KNOCKS, De Sica’s MARRIAGE ITALIAN STYLE with Loren and Mastroianni. The theatre sometimes day/dated with the Park Square Cinema.

Went to BU in late 70s and remember this being shuttered, and
possibly associated w/ the Embassy studio/theatre chain. Believe this became the BU /Barnes & Noble Bookstore which would place this at 660 Beacon Street.
