Cheap land. Regency Mall. Lesson learned: don’t put a bunch of concrete on top of swampland. Old Mont Ward wing appears to be separated by an easy foot from the rest of the Mall.

Saw Cocoon here! Walked across the cemetary. And Star Trek! And “Never Say Never, Again” when Sean Connery reemerged! Taco Viva my favorite, though mom and sis preferred Orange Julius, but we agreed on the corn dogs. I did time at Musicland, until Augusta Mall expanded. Then, I was a Sam Goody girl. Remember the days of Glenn Hills on Friday and Butler on Saturday? Snagged more folks for shoplifting at Augusta Mall in a week’s time than Regency for a month. Although, I appreciate not getting punched or stabbed at Augusta Mall during the confrontation.

Boy Trey,I wish you would have had a camera and took some pictures of the cinema.I went over there once when the mall was on its last legs and snapped a picture of the front Box office only to have to “SECURITY MALL GUARDS” chase me down wanting to know why Was taking pictures.I have gotten into the 8 plex down the road a few times, but the last time i went for exploring someone had welded the exit door shut.I am Surprized someone hasn’t reopened the SOUTHGATE Cinema for Spanish films, that 8 back plex should have been in North Augusta where it might just
still be open,That area is UNDER screened big time.

Actually, Russel I do recall that ! I was 10 years old, but I do remember someone dressed as Darth Vader walking around! Cool……. thanks for the welcome to the site !

Good to see you on here Trey! Always nice to read someone else’s recollections. When your dad brought you to see Empire Strikes Back, with the line snaking inside the mall, do you remember seeing a guy dressed up like Darth Vader? Well, that could’ve been ME!! The manager had me and another guy take turns walking around the crowd. Couldn’t tell you how many times some little brat came up from behind me and tried to kick me! Yeah, it’s a little known fact that “The Force” doesn’t work so good when you’re in close proximity to a Chick-Fil-A, otherwise I would’ve smacked those brats with my light saber!!

In 2001, my step sister was dating a guy who worked for the Marshals Office, whose offices were located at the mall. One Friday night, I was hanging around with them,we were eating in a Taco Bell, and he goes “Trey, you want to go look around the old mall?”. I jumped at the chance, and went over there and took a walk around. I cant recall much about what the theater looked like then……..I know it was after Wards had closed, and I believe no other stores were left open at all. I do recall, as this was late summer, the air was running, and it seemed to be kept up, aside from everything being closed. I wish I had camera with me that night. If any of you guys find a way to tour the mall, please let me know as Id love to come along…………

Another theater I frequented a lot. Saw tons upon tons of movies here. I can recall seeing Disney’s Jungle Book sometime in the late 70s…… My dad took me out of school to go see Empire Strikes Back and the line went all thru the mall…..Seeing Rocky 3 here, Footloose, FireFox, MegaForce (hey I was 12!!!). I remember coming in 1990 to see I Come in Peace. I can recall my last visit to this theater as well, I came in early 1993 and caught Pet Sematary 2……Id love to get a look inside this place today………

HEY!!!! I finally got back on!! Don’t know why, but I had the hardest time…don’t know if it was because of the new format here or because we just got a new computer. Hopefully I can get back on and am able to navigate around. Back to theater stuff…IF someone does buy this old place, I’d love to see the theater open back up, probably as a dollar-house. If it did, I’d probably come out and see what it looks like, but only once…this is a horrible part of town. But, you know, that side of town needs a theater. I think a dollar-house would clean up. Hey Mike…wanna go in together and run a theater?? We’ll hire Charles to be the projectionist. And we can hire Barry to do something easy…we’ll end up firing him because he’ll be too busy talking about Star Trek and motorcycles and trying to make out with concession girls in the handicapped bathroom!

Augusta Licensing and Inspections checked the mall today and reported “no mold” and the stuctually Sound. Before, the recession a Japanese company had plans to buy and refurbish the mall that contains REGENCY I.II,And III Cinemas.

So many locals were afraid of the mold scare,if the Mall was ever to reopen.Having been in the REGENCY EXCHANGE 8 across the street, that complex is eat up with MOLD.

Mike, frankly, I’m shocked that these AC units haven’t been hit by the copper thieves in the area. Also, make sure you make an effort to contact Charles. He has a touchy theater-related issue that y'all need to work out.

Regency Mall Cinemas were the last to be built under Four Screens.Even at that time theatres were expanding to six or eight Screens.Nov.3 1978 a strange booking for a Midnight Movie Crowd,“AMERICAN GRAFFITI” is the film.Promoted on WZZW a easy listening Radio staion, which every few Late Show moviegoers would listen to.3 Stooges shorts. Dec.31 1979 “STAR TREK” is playing.Would have been great on the National Hills Theatre Screen. Feb 19 1982 “Taps” is on its last legs.March 5 1982 with “BEAST WITHIN"and "PRIVATE LESSONS” or more of a Modjeska Theatre Line up than GCC.When “ON Golden Pond” opens I start my job here at Regency working with Russ and Barry,I think Two Assistants and one Chief of Staff which seemed like Assistant Manager to me.But that was GCC.March 26 1982 and “MAKING LOVE” is playing I thought Locals might protest because of Subject matter, but not a soul showed up.I wondered if they realize how many Tickets protesters Sell.April 30 1982 and Taco Viva and DIXIE DOOLEY the “Master of Magic” put on a nice show for a Kiddie Show, the feature was a rather Violent “7th Voyage of Sinbad”.July 2 1982 and Regency gets a Dog for Summer and I don’t mean Benji, “MEGAFORCE” is a stinker.Clint is next door in “FIREFOX” with “Rocky III” most likely our highest grossing flick of the Summer. August 27 1982 and “YOUNG DOCTORS IN LOVE” does turn away business with the Medical College here plenty of folks want to see this R rated comedy. Our Late shows that weekend included “NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD” “Pink Floyd” and one the G.I’s like from Fort Gordon,“SWORD and the SORCERER”.“On Golden Pond” i remembered I brought my old Girlfriend,Beverly Oglesby to see it,I guess to make up for all the Clint Eastwwod movies I made her watch in the mid seventies.

WEll, I am glad to know that!!!!I guess in OTHER parts of the country saving a buck or two is more important than the function of a Theatre and that is to entertain.I do remember one night at Columbia 1 and 2 we had no last show,Why? CAUSE IT WAS SNOWING.And Snow and Augusta don’t mix that well,Thanks Russell some of the commments I was getting made me feel like I was the only that NEVER ask someone to get up and LEAVE.I think we worked for two pretty good chains,GCC and ABC/PLITT that put customers first.

No, can’t say I ever remember giving out passes just so we didn’t have to show that last movie. Now, there may have been times when the weather was really bad that we’d offer. I remember when I managed the Northlake, up in Atlanta, there was snow and ice coming down pretty hard, at it was about 9:15 or so, and the movies at the triple had already started. I went in the theaters and told the folks what was happening and offered them passes to come back. I mean, the stuff was really coming down hard, and the conditions would be worse in 2 hours, after the movie. I remember a few people taking me up on it, but the rest complained that I had interrupted the movie and they were ticked off!! I remember I drove home later that night with about 300 pounds of popcorn seeds in my trunk to give me better traction!!

Yeah,I saw it,He was a heck of a security guard at The triple.I wish we could get Barry and Chuck on.I will mail it,i have it on my desk.Oh,when you had a night at Regency 1.2 and 3 and say a total of nine folks are there for the last showings,Did you pass out RAIN CHECKS?At the Boyd and Lake Theatres some folks think that is what we do when only a few show up.I have never done it,Never thought about it,am I stupid.

Mike, just wanted to pass along that Allen Chavous, who we talked about being the security guard at most of our midnight shows, as just passed away. His obit/picture is in today’s Augusta Chronicle. From what Charles Pileggi (Allen grew up next to Charles' mother’s house) told me, Allen had cancer. Even though I haven’t seen Allen in a couple of decades, I’m still sad at the idea of him being gone. Speaking of being sad because someone is gone, I’d like to tell you that I’ve really enjoyed that article you sent me about Chuck Dray…BUT I CAN’T SAY THAT because you NEVER mailed it to me!! Uh, so, can you please send it to me?? Thanks! ;)

Boyd theatre in Bethlehem.Pa. It was about handing out passes when only one or two people show for a movie on the last show. For the life of me I don’t ever remember a Manager or Company policy that said hand out rain checks when only one or two show up. I worked a Single screen at National Hills and the Imperial.Multi-plexes,something you know might be different in some way.
