Grauman’s is showing a Korean 3D movie at 9:30PM on Friday, start of a three-day Korean Festival, mainly at the Chinese 6. Tickets are a reasonable $10, or $100 for an all-access pass.

25-cent movie night is back! Tuesday 6/12, at 6:15PM Kirk Douglas will view his refurbished imprint, followed by “Spartacus” at 7PM. Unlike the previous 25 cent screening(10-ticket limit), this time they are limiting to 4; however, as they have separate box offices for Grauman’s and the Chinese 6, just visit both and buy 8 as I did. Tonight I’m going to the Egyptian and may buy 4 or 8 more. As with the “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” showing I give away tickets to tourists. LOL, “Candid Camera” should film the expressions on skeptical passersby that a good samaritan is offering free tix! It must be too good to be true…but it’s not.

On 3/23 caught the 10:45PM “Hunger Games” show at the Village and was happy to see over 400, mostly UCLA students, in attendance.

I was also at the Bay Sunday night for the 6PM showing of “The Warriors”. Luckily, as a non-projectionist I tend to miss most imperfections and the Warrior print was quite good. Seal Beach was surprisingly quiet. I hope this theater can stay open. I live in N Hollywood and made my first visit since 2009. When I lived in Norwalk in the 1980s I enjoyed many movies at the Bay.

Saw Body Heat around 1981 at the Avenue. It was a good alternative to the shoebox mutiplexes of that time.

In 1967-68 I saw the re-release of “Gone With the Wind” here. I sat in the balcony and the large audience gave Clark Gable a rousing applause upon his first screen entrance. I live in L A now and would be happy to give visitors a tour of our miraculously remaining single screens:

I can’t believe I was one of only about 25-30 attending the 1/11 showing of the 1940 and 1966 One Million Years B.C. movies. I will be there for the 1/25 showing of “Paths of Glory”.

Dining hint: When Angels Flight reopens soon you should take the ride up, turn right(east)and walk two blocks to the Colburn School self-serve cafe for tasty and reasonable food, and then take the Angels Flight back down. FYI, I always take the Metro to Pershing Square and the theater is only two blocks away. Metro now runs every 10 minutes in the evening and is very safe.

Laemmle had a stroke of genius with a free screening of 1961’s “Raisin In The Sun” on MLK Day. Mgmt asked the 300 attendees if it was their first time at the NoHo 7 and 90% raised their hands. I overheard many favorable comments about the new Laemmle, including their fabulous posters.

Danny, the same thing happened with me with the water bottle issue; however, the concession counter will give you a free cup to use at the drinking fountain.

Laemmle has a winner with The NoHo 7. I’ve already seen three movies there at half or less than ArcLight prices and the Premiere card is the best deal in movies.

dtrigubetz commented about Laemmle NoHo 7 on Jan 11, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Saw “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” on 1/9 in one of the big auditoriums(#1)and happy to report the sound was crisp; not a small thing as I have some hearing loss.

I purchased the $100 Premiere Card which is the best bargain in movies: My $8 senior rate became $6 and my $4 senior combo(drink & pocorn) was reduced 20% to $3.20. Only the $4.50 senior rate before 6PM on Weds is not discounted. Regular patrons can see a movie all day Tuesdays for only $7 or an unbelievable $5 with the Premiere card. Even on weekends the card gets you a $1 discount on tickets.

Sat in the balcony for the XMAS Eve showing of the new Mission Impossible movie. I like the free parking, easy accessibility and $8.75 senior price. New Years Eve I will see the 8:10P showing of “Shame.” Surprised they got that limited release Oscar buzz movie and hope they get more special movies in the future. One can easily combine a movie with shopping at Gelson’s and Best Buy or one of many local restaurants.

I have attended this venue 13 times in 2011; the 12/20 evening showing of “In Time” drew 180 patrons. Unbelievably you can see a 3D movie like the recent Captain America for only a $2 surcharge(as low as $3.50 for Tuesdays). This may be the lowest 3D price in America. Compare that to Grauman’s Chinese price increase now gouging a top price of $19 for 3D!

dtrigubetz commented about Laemmle NoHo 7 on Dec 25, 2011 at 12:58 pm

Update: I attended for the second time on Christmas Eve. The 10PM showing of “Young Adult” in auditorium 7 had about 13 patrons. I peeked in all seven theaters on my way out at midnight and estimated about 100 patrons total(all in all not bad considering XMAS Eve is a very slow movie night). The listed capacity for all seven theaters is 1100. Theaters 1 & 2 are the largest, followed by #6, with the rest seating a little over 100.

My first visit concern over the sound quality was mostly overcome as aud 7 had good acoustics. I was famished so I ordered a Connie’s cheese pizza, which the counter person said was good, and it was. The senior combo at $4 for a popcorn and soda are a good buy.

Laemmle understands value pricing: $11 tops, with $8 matinee bargain prices, $7 pricing for all on Tuesdays, and $4.50 senior admission before 6PM on Wednesdays. I will be a regular patron. FYI, both nights I found FREE street parking on Lankershim two blocks south. Many meters are free after 6PM and all after 8PM.

dtrigubetz commented about Laemmle NoHo 7 on Dec 24, 2011 at 2:45 pm

Attended the 10:10PM showing on 12/23 of “The Artist”, an amazing movie. Only 12 of us at the screening; however, overall usually bustling NoHo was quiet.

The GOOD: Fabulous location, flexible and patron-friendly ticket and concession pricing. The railing running the length of the middle isle adds safety for the many seniors who attend Laemmle theaters. Leather(I think)seats give good back support while having a rocking function.

The BAD: Hallway carpeting has a low budget hard feel with no buffer between the hard concrete. My auditorium(no. 5) was a generic box with seats too close to the rather small screen. Could only judge by the trailers but the acoustics seem only fair. Laemmle has chosen not to add a cafe, which is a BIG MISTAKE. NoHo crowd want a destination and the adjoining unoccupied space should be utilized to build theater traffic.

I am a frequent attendee at Graumans, but got the shock of my life when I bought a senior ticket for the Sunday 5PM showing of “New Year’s Eve”. I expected to pay the usual $9 and was shocked that the price had zoomed to $12.50 and $14.75 after 6PM on weekends. The adult rate is $13.75 and $16 after 6PM on weekends. A 3D surcharge adds $3! I declined the ticket and went over to the El Capitan and got a live organist, mini stage show, a holiday bell bracelet, Muppets exhibits, a friendly usher who opened the auditorium door for me as I had a concession tray($5.75 kids combo includes a small pocorn, soda and M&Ms)for $12.

Is the Chinese management out of their gourds? With 1000 seats to fill they should LOWER their prices. They add insult to injury by ADDING sales tax to refreshments.

FYI, the best 3D bargain is at the Regency Valley 6 in North Hollywood. I saw a 3D movie on their Tuesday half-price day for $3.50($1.50 + $2 surcharge).

The Straight No Chaser concert was a fabulous sold-out event. I sat in the upper mezzanine and noticed that the theater seats, except for reupholstering, are vintage. Ironically, the so-called premium orchestra seats have been replaced by hotel meeting type seats with no arm rest!

The upper mezzanine had great acoustics and sightlines. I am going back today for the Aimee Mann Christmas Show, also $20 on Goldstar.

On 11/4 caught a fabulous pocket version of the musical “Sweet Charity”. My ticket was only $7 on Goldstar. It is not unusual for me to pay less to see a great live play than a movie.

dtrigubetz commented about Regency Village Theatre on Nov 25, 2011 at 12:45 pm

On 11/17 caught the 10:30PM showing of J Edgar. Only eight of us in the audience. If I ran the Village and Bruin I would do the following: 1) Sell a $59 annual movie pass with photo that would allow the holder to see movies for $5 and bring in as many companions for $7; also, the smart card would allow the passholder to see a movie a second, third, etc. time for $2 a pop(FYI: I saw “2010’s LA MISSION 14 times).

There could also be a family pass with similar savings. The concession stand choices would be upgraded and prices lowered. Free wi-fi would be offered and small tables and sitting areas sprinkled throughout the lobby and one could install a glass partition in the upper balcony and put more tables up there.

Venues like Disneyland and Knotts Berry Farm understand one has to bring in people. The Village has about 1400 seats to fill. Raising an average screening number from say 30 to 100 or more much more will more than increase gross receipts. If the Vista and Los Feliz can run $5.50 senior rates and $6.50 for everybody before 6PM, there’s no reason the Village/Bruin couldn’t offer reduced rates.

The Vista and Los Feliz are showing all the brand new movies currently as the Hollywood Arclight and at a fraction of the cost.

The John Wayne tribute was great-hope some of you attended. A live musical duo, scores of people in Western and period miltary costumes, the whole Wayne family in attendance as well as Kim Darby and ageless Earl Holliman. There was a very nice videotaped tribute from Glen Campbell. The “True Grit” print was quite good.

In the 1980s I saw live magic shows there, as well as performers Rudy Vallee, Buddy Ebsen, the Wiere Brothers, Bob Cummings and others. One year I attended the New Years Eve dance. Art Deco and His Orchestra were the house band. Art’s mother proudly told me of his violinist son, “He studied with Heifetz.”

The artifacts were a blast: Walter Winchell’s hat, W C Field’s trick pool table, drums Eleanor Powell danced on in a movie, the original Johnny Carson Tonight Show set.
