I love this. I had little information on this drive in, but knew where it was and could find it on an old topo map. Now, here are two people who can add to my knowledge. Thank you both.

I should have mentioned that the building has been demolished, and it is now a vacant lot across from the red brick structure.

At one time I was married to Charles King’s great-granddaughter, and often talked with her grandfather (Mr. King’s son-in-law), who helped construct several of the King Brother’s theaters. He said there was a theater further out MLK Blvd., at the corner of Fisher’s Alley. Fisher’s alley now ends in a cul-de-sac behind a small shopping center. I believe this is the theater that is being listed here.

I believe that originally this theater was in a shopping center on the west side of Michigan Ave. at the end of the viaduct leading into Brookely Field. After Interstate 10 was built, this property was converted into a motel, and has since been demolished. I have been told there was a base theater in Brookley, bit I’m not quite sure where it was or if the building still strands.

I remember seeing this building a long time ago; I was working on a construction project up at Broad and Augusta Streets, and there was a restaurant adjacent to it that I ate lunch at many times. As I remember, in the ‘70s the sign on the marquee was the Gem Theater. I also believe it was further south on Broad, and is now the empty lot between the second and third (the closed restaurant, maybe) buildings south of Kentucky Street.

I believe this is confused with another theater. The Do Drive-In was on Highway 43 about .20 miles “west” (away from town) of Wolf Ridge Road. There is a shopping center on the site now, but on Google Earth you can see what may be the remains of the ramps on southern side of the property.
