Statewide opened this theater in 1967. During the 1970s it was twinned, and during most of its life was operated by General Cinema.

“Inland Cinema I & II” or “Inland Twin” should be the primary name. “Inland Cinema” should be an alternate name.

This theater should not be confused with the “Inland Center 5,” also located in San Bernardino.

<<< The Tobie Cinemas opened as a twin in the late-1980’s. >>>

There was a single-screen “Tobie” in Senatobia operating in the 1970s. So, unless this is a completely new and different theater using the same name as an earlier venue, this opened as a single-screener in the late-1960s or early-1970s.

<<< 1971 taken over by Womecto >>>

From this point until 1984 it was promoted as “Wometco-Lathrop.”

<<< 1980 Three cinemas >>>

Conversion to triplex took place in 1979.

<<< 1986 expanded to seven cinemas >>>

Expansion was to eight screens, not seven.

Coate commented about Westgate 5 Theatre on Mar 28, 2010 at 4:03 pm

DavyDuck’s post of 8/21/07 was interesting. Something didn’t quite seem right, though, so this prompted me to go dig out some notes and newspaper ad photocopies. What I conclude is that the passage of time plays so many tricks on one’s memory!

<<< *We were to open “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” exclusive in Portland in the [Westgate’s] big auditorium – huge double-page ads were placed, and a line of about 1000 people were outside waiting for the first show – but the print had not arrived! * >>>

While it’s true that Columbia had booked “Close Encounters” at the Westgate (and even sued 20th Century-Fox and Luxury Theatres to try to get them to end their “Star Wars” run), ultimately, “CE3K” played crosstown at the Eastgate and a simultaneous booking at Moyer’s Town Center (no Cinema Treasures page created).

<<< *The problem: to hold onto Star Wars, it was contracted to play in the big auditorium, and moving it to a smaller theatre (even though it was only drawing small crowds) would violate the contract and end the run – and 20th Century Fox badly wanted our print back and to pull “Star Wars” from exhibition. * >>>

“Star Wars” couldn’t have been playing to that small a crowd because just a month earlier had upgraded to a 70mm print which increased their grosses. The film during its run consistently week after week exceeded the contract’s holdover amount, a clause that resulted in Columbia losing their lawsuit and allowing “Star Wars” to stay put at Westgate.

<<< Moments before opening the doors, the staff had to tell the crowd that the film would actually open across town at the Eastgate – and the crowd trashed the lobby. >>>

How would so many people have known to line up at Westgate when the newspaper ads from the day before and morning of the first day did not list Westgate as the theater scheduled to play the film??? Perhaps some of the confusion stems from the opening day ad claiming “CE3K” was playing at Rose Moyer?

It’s unclear to me from the ads I have if the film played at Rose Moyer for any part of its run. By the film’s second week the ad confusion appears to have been cleared up and the film was promoted as playing simultaneously at both Eastgate and Town Center.

<<< Strangely, a few days later, we were indeed playing “Close Encounters” in the big house, and “Star Wars” ended it’s run. >>>

Not true! “Star Wars” stayed put at Westgate and, in fact, played there all the way through autumn of 1978, a U.S. record of 76 weeks. And the reason it played there for so long, including nine weeks after all other prints in the country were pulled, is due in large part to the “CE3K” lawsuit.

The National opened to the general public forty years ago today. Here, as a tribute, is an updated list of the theater’s booking history. I hope this brings back a lot of good memories for those who had the pleasure of attending any movies at the theater.

THE NATIONAL THEATRE, 1970-2008

Compiled by Michael Coate

This filmography represents a brief history and playdates for the NATIONAL Theatre in the Los Angeles community of Westwood Village. The data covers the venue’s booking history from its grand opening in 1970 through its closing in 2007 and demolition in 2008.

Not included in this filmography are test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, premieres and other private events. The dates represent the first day of commercial release, and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. (No format notation implies a standard 35mm presentation with monaural sound. A format notation with an * is an unconfirmed presentation.)

The principal reference was archived microfilm of the Los Angeles Times newspaper.

<<< 130 South U.S. Highway 17, Myrtle Beach >>>

The address is not correct. (Notice the “map” link doesn’t take you to the correct location? Clue number one that the address is wrong!)

First, this theater was located in North Myrtle Beach, not Myrtle Beach.

Second, I’m not certain of the exact address (but I know the one given isn’t right). CinemaTour gives the address as “130 Highway 17 South” while a newspaper ad I have circa 1977 gives a generic address of “Highway 17 at Ocean Drive.”

<<< *The Ocean Cinemas opened as a three-screen cinema in the early-1980’s * >>>

Wrong!

1) This theater opened several years before the early 1980s.

2) It was a twin before it was a triplex.

I’m not sure of the theater’s full timeline or screen-count history, but I have evidence that “Star Wars” played here in ‘77 and that at the time it was a twin (promoted in local papers as “Ocean Cinema 1 & 2”).

Don’t rely on the Internet. Use a primary source (such as original newspaper promotion) and you usually won’t go wrong.

<<< Originally this theatre opened as the Dixie Cine Twin. >>>

This theater was never called Dixie. (Why would it have been? It was not located in the South.)

It was originally called the Deux Cine. “Deux” as in: French for two. As in: a twin cinema… get it?

Wrong again, Chuck! [Sigh…]

This theater played “Star Wars” in ‘77, so it opened at least a few years before the timeframe cited in the post above.

Monsieur Rivest…
That June 12, 1987 date you cited was when the theater changed its name to “Movieland” and opened its sixth screen. The theater actually opened twelve years earlier as the three-screen West 11th Walk-In Cinema in conjunction with the West 11th Drive-In.

I believe the correct spelling of this theater is Capital City, not Capitol City.

If someone tries to search for it with its correct spelling, they will be misled into thinking no page for it exists. On the other hand, if one does a “Springfield” search, they’ll find it but may never realize it is misspelled.

Coate commented about Happy 45th, "The Sound Of Music" on Mar 17, 2010 at 11:37 am

“Jaws” was NOT the first movie to gross $100 million. The figures cited in the “Jaws” documentary were rentals, not gross.

And for those who may not understand the difference, a rental is the percentage of the gross returned to the distributor based on agreed upon terms (usually a sliding scale but in general about 50-60%). Prior to “Entertainment Tonight” in the 1980s reporting weekend box-office performance as entertainment news, the rental was what typically was reported in trade publications.

It’s unfortunate, in some respects, that a film’s full gross is what is now reported, especially with our society’s obsession with box-office figures. When you think about it, the full gross is a useless figure because one cannot determine profit from that figure. Just like when one runs a business, to determine profit one must subtract expenses from the net. A film’s rental is akin to a net figure.

To clarify, “Jaws” was the first movie to top $100 in rental, a significant feat, for sure, but one that certainly requires a distinction in reporting the rental vs gross thing. Therefore, I’m confident my claim is correct that “The Sound Of Music” was the first movie to gross $100 million.
