Many of us still like regular nice seats as the recliners take up way too much space, many times you have to bring back in when people go by. This cinema in Chicago I hope keeps what they have. Theatre owners loose so much seating when they do a re do of seats. Not so bad on the weekdays but they loose sales on the weekends. Many auditoriums sell out with just 100 seats when they had 250 before the recliners went in. Thanks again Dallas for the image.
Dolby Vision Cinema®In auditorium Lucky #13 is about to have their nice red lights turned off for good. These red lights are on the side walls and over the Dolby Atmos® ceiling speakers. They are on when you come into the cinema space. Seems AMC is turning them off soon in a few weeks and just have a blue strip light down the side cove section when you come inside Dolby Cinema® #13. Bad move on AMC’s part. At least they could have kept the red LED lights on when you came in, then switched to blue for the trailers and then shut them off for the main feature. What a waste even putting them in when they are about not to use them at all. Complain when you pay over $20 plus a fee $$$ to see Dolby Cinema® here that you miss the red!!! To my shock on a visit to see the scope movie ‘Bigger’ today in a rather small curved screen in space #2 for the first time in many months they had the motor black masking working again. I did not have to see white screen at the top and bottom. Maybe someone at AMC saw my complaints? Thank you AMC for bringing the proper masking back.
Thanks Dennis for this photo. I remember going to the Fox National. A great semi curved 70mm screen with nice stereo surround. With It’s gold curtains It was the place to go to see a movie in the LA area. This photo is spooky, was It a set up for a movie being shot inside the cinema? These dummies would be great as a fun thing to do, put in some empty seats like in the Castro Theatre in SF CA as a novelty for older people that don’t like to go to the movies alone. In this day and time the managers would have to watch the crowd that they did not walk out with one of the fake guests. Thanks again.
The CinemaScope®/ Panavision® setting at the Castro with black masking dropped down from the top and open a little on the sides makes for a nice semi wide Image at 2.55 or 2.35. If the deco pillars on the sides of the stage were not in place they could have put in a way larger curved scope screen in 1954. The original small 1.33 screen frame stage area is back behind the present wide screen set up.
Kevin thanks what a bland front to a cinema. No colorful marquee up what is playing inside or neon. Almost looks like a mall entrance or office building. I wonder If the Rave folks had more going on outside then the lame CineMark company? At least they kept a few lighted poster cases on the side. They need to open up the window curtains and show the lobby ceiling and put some color LED lights on the building.
Thanks CB. The D-150 screen that UA Theatres had in many of their cinemas was one of the best curved screen set ups ever. We were lucky in the SF Bay Area, we had 3 D-150 screens going and they are all gone now. Time for UA/Regal to bring back this system.
This former big long closed Century 14 Victorian Theatre in Sparks Nevada re opens on Thursday Sept 20 2018 now run by Galaxy Theatres. The new name is the Galaxy Victorian Theatres. With a complete 2 year make over like all new seats, giant DFX curved screen, Dolby Atmos®, rugs, new neon marquee ect. It’s sister cinema a few miles away The Galaxy Legends IMAX will be cinemas #1-12. The new fixed up Galaxy Victorian Theatre will be cinemas #14-26.
Maybe a new LUCKY #13 Theatre they can put in between the two other Galaxy Theatres and show horror/hell Grindhouse films and attract the supernatural gambling movie types in Sparks Nevada. Good luck to Frank at Galaxy Theatres for doing this remodel re opening and to my friend Ken who does all the movie intros a few miles away at the Galaxy Legends IMAX. Now their new cinema at Victorian SQ can program more art and festival films for the growing Sparks area with many hundreds of new built apartments and condos walking distance from the theatre.
You would think the people that lease the land would have had a closing week big movie event party to send the 1 70 off! Not so they just closed the place and the bulldozers will be coming in.
Sorry the Regal Cinema was up the street next to the old Paramount Theatre. You can see how big the ex Loews/Fox Warfield is from the side back with It’s office building on Market ST. The former Fox Crest Theatre now Crazy Horse Theatre sits out in the vacant lot next to the Warfield and is still open with girl dancers on stage.
Thanks William for the photo image. They did not have 70mm TODD-AO here and a semi small screen I wonder If they even played this film in 4 track mag stereo? I know they had stereo for ‘Gigi’ that played as a roadshow. This marquee has changed over the years to the brand new one for August Hall. They are now open.
Thanks so much for this photo Mad Organ. Nice to see green lights on a curtain. In the USA most cinemas don’t even bother or even lite curtains these days. No showmanship left in Americas multiplex junk.
The art paintings on the left cement wall of the former Market St SF entrance of the Paramount Theatre are semi new and were put on the old lobby wall in the last few years by local art people.
As I walked by the former Pix Theatre on Market SF on Sat Aug 25 2018 we noticed both the long gone Radio Shack is gone on the right and now the Subway store on the left is now for lease. A wall divides up just the front part of the Pix B movie theatre. Some smart small theatre owner that wants to make some tourist money and have fun needs to put the Pix Theatre back in as best they can including the classic neon marquee. This former B movie cinema is only ½ block from the busy Powell St cable car and Bart trains. Thousands of tourists are here every day. There are no more single screen movie theatres left on Market ST in SF these days. Needs to be operated as a Grindhouse with 3 retro features showing around the clock. This means old trailers and cartoons ect. Turn It back to the good old days. The locals and tourists would love it. The help working at the New Pix can act out the glory days of the Grindhouse with their outfits and attitude. A great place for Tarantino to take It over. I am sure you can get a good lease with the owners of the building.
I guess the re model people will wait till the last week before re opening in mid Sept 2018 to polish up the classic ever leaking terrazzo entrance were the boxoffice once stood. This fake front was put up when the did a mini remodel after the Cinerama 70mm people people left and It became a legit house with the opening of Chorus Line. Working at a local TV station then I did a small news feature on the re opening.
Thanks Atmos for the photo. This place needs some color lights in the niches not all white bulbs! Something is strange on the left part of the stage screen. The curtain balance does not seem correct. Is that a heater vent or left organ grill on the left side? Someone must love Orange/Terracotta paint here. Like I say needs some Green and Blue bulbs. Nice looking theatre.

Thanks Dallas for the photo. So nice to see a curved screen at this cinema in Chicago.
Neon needs work. Hope they can get funding to repair the missing tubes and electric work.

The curtain at the Fox California sits broke these days. Landmark won’t bother to fix It. It was not the one in this ad. Thanks for the ad.

Thanks Suwantii for the photos. Very creative just needs a little neon. You won’t find this in any American Theatre lobby.

Looks like the two side end marquee panel wings at the new GG will be backlit by neon light? No new LED screens on the sides.
Thanks Kers for the photo. What a nice large curved screen at this cinema.

This photo along with my others were taken in August 2018.
Sorry my error this was not the lot of the former Regal Theatre. That is up a block near were the Paramount Theatre was.
Sorry my mistake this is not the lot were the Regal was. That was up the street near the long gone Paramount Theatre.
