BradE41 took the liberty of filling in the last few playdates for my NATIONAL list, so now I’ll do the same for his VILLAGE list by expanding upon, clarifying and making a few (minor) corrections.

VILLAGE: The 1980s

Compiled by Michael Coate

AKA: Mann Village, Mann’s Village, Westwood Village, Fox Westwood Village

Not included on this filmography are test screenings, sneak-preview screenings, midnight screenings, premieres and other private events. The dates represent the first day of commercial release and, where known, the presentation format has been provided. (No format notation implies a 35mm-monaural sound presentation.) The principal reference was archived microfilm of the Los Angeles Times newspaper. Some data was referenced from BradE41’s postings of Feb. 5 & 12 and the web article 70mm in Los Angeles.

RE = Re-Issue/ Return Engagement
MO = Move-over (i.e. continuation of engagement from another theater)

The Village became THX certified in November 1984.

A check of the microfilm of the Minneapolis Tribune for Valentine’s Day 1976 indicates “Lucky Lady” was playing on the COOPER’s large original screen and “Three Days Of The Condor” was playing in the CAMEO auditorium.

Re “Windjammer”…

I’m not certain what exactly was shown. Eyewitness recollections of what was shown have varied. I know that by its final week, newspaper promotion included a “Not Shown In Original Format” type blurb.

I’m aware of some re-issue screenings as early as 1971 in other parts of the country. Stuart Galbraith’s book on Detroit movie theaters, for instance, claims it was shown there in 70mm. (But that book has a number of crazy claims; “El Cid” in 3-strip Cinerama, for example.) And I know of a source in Canada claiming a 70mm “composite” print was once available. Whatever was shown appears to have been a pale imitation of the original version.

***Quoting "RobertR": I never knew Windjammer had a re-release in 1973, was it in Cinerama?***

It may have been more appropriate to claim that “jam” was re-released, because apparently the “Wind” and “mer” panels were not shown! :–)

***Very cool. Thanks Michael. I know you are tempted to do the Village next, then the Bruin, the Chinese............***

Mark, I would love to do up a list for the CHINESE and, in fact, have had several “fits and starts” at just such a list. That venue poses a challenge, though, because I think these lists work best for single-screen venues, and the period of time when the CHINESE was just a single-screener does not interest me as much as does the ‘80s & '90s triplex era. Plus, the theater is EIGHTY years old; how long do you think it would take to compile a list???

I don’t wish to deal with trying to sort out which titles played the CHINESE’s main auditorium vs. those that played on screens II & III. Also, it was common to open a film in #1 then later in the run move it over to II or III. Again, I don’t want to deal with any of that. (And the “top” position in the Mann Theater Directory in the newspaper ads was not always an assurance of what was playing in #1.)

Now, the VILLAGE would interest me…at least for the ‘80s & '90s when I was regularly attending movies there. And seeing BradE41’s partial list may just inspire me… (That lengthy post, by the way, ought to have been made on the VILLAGE page, don’t you think?!)

But, I’m not convinced there are that many people interested in these bookings/playdates lists. If there were, wouldn’t we be seeing more of them?

To really answer your question, I’m more interested in tracking films than theaters, but have been guilty of doing both. The next theater project I’m working on will remain a mystery until posting time. The only clue I’ll give is that the venue is not located in Southern California.

***What a great history created by Michael Coate above. I wish he were able to do a grid of all the Westwood theatre bookings during that timeframe. Does any exist out there?***

Thank you, Mark. I’m pleased you have enjoyed the list. It brings back a lot of good memories, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, I do not have any plans to do a similar listing for the other Westwood theaters. The closest thing to what you’re seeking may be the 70mm in Los Angeles project, which, while not listing all of the bookings, identifies those films exhibited throughout Westwood in the 70-millimeter format.

On the subject of these booking lists, I’d like to mention, in case you haven’t seen it yet, that I recently posted one for the CINERAMA DOME.

Since this year marks the 45th anniversary of the opening of the CINERAMA DOME, I thought I’d make a series of postings to commemorate the occasion. I’ll kick this off with the 1960s roadshow era playdates. I’ll post the rest at a later date. Enjoy!

THE CINERAMA DOME

Compiled by Michael Coate

***QUOTE: I will never forget seeing 2001 the week of its release in 1969. ***

Minor correction regarding your date (of course, you may have intended to type an “8” and keyed in a “9” by mistake). Whatever the case, I’ll take this opportunity to mention a “2001” article I wrote a few years ago that detailed its original release, the San Jose details of which were included.

23 July 1968 … San Jose, CA, USA: Century 21 [88 weeks]

A bit of trivia for you that I think appropriate for this page: San Jose’s Century 21 run of “2001” was the longest, continuous, single-theater run of the film in the U.S. (The duration of the engagements in Los Angeles and San Francisco were longer but they included a moveover to a different theater during the course their runs.)

The name of the person in question is actually Robert, not Richard, Harris (and typically credits himself as Robert A. Harris).

Southwest Missouri? Near Springfield?

The Springfield-Greene County Library in Springfield has The New York Times on microfilm for the time frame you desire.

Coate commented about Question For New York Film/Theatregoers on Jan 24, 2008 at 8:57 am

I find your question indicative of what is disturbing about the Internet Culture in which we currently live, that being this idea that all information just magically exists and can be accessed with a mouseclick or two. I can attest from experience that the lists you’re seeking must be created (i.e. researched, compiled, assembled, etc.) and it is an understatement to say it is a time-consuming process. So to expect your desired information to be readily available I think is unreasonable.

Getting off my rant and answering your question, do a search here of the theaters that interest you and note that some of them, such as ASTOR PLAZA and ZIEGFELD, have some or all of the info you are seeking.

Where do you reside? I find it difficult to believe that you have no access to a microfilm collection of the NY TIMES. In my traveling (and I’ve been to hundreds of libraries across the country, both public and university), I can say that the NY TIMES is without question the most commonly stocked paper. Look harder…or try a university library…or find a library that offer services such as ProQuest…or try Inter-Library Loan…or ask (nicely) the Cinema Treasures regulars to continue posting playdate histories.

Coate commented about Plitt and Cineplex-Odeon in Chicago on Jan 24, 2008 at 8:40 am

The acquisition of Plitt by Cineplex Odeon was countrywide, not just in Chicago. And, while the deal, I believe, was made in 1985, many of the venues retained their Plitt name through 1986-87. The Northpoint in San Francisco, for instance, used the Plitt name well into 1987, and during the latter months of ‘87 went under the “Cineplex Odeon-Plitt” hyphenate.

budyboy100… You are really beginning to test my patience! Do you honestly believe that the information I’ve been posting here and in the Star Wars anniversary thread has been culled from memory or pulled out of my ass?!

Dude, I researched the matter by consulting the very source you keep recommending! In other words, I already went through the archived copies of the Minneapolis newspaper (and Variety) week by week and relayed to you my findings. “STAR WARS” DID NOT PLAY AT SOUTHTOWN DURING 1977.

And one other thing: The SOUTHTOWN during the timeframe in question was operated by General Cinema, not by Mann.

Coate commented about White City Cinemas on Jan 11, 2008 at 4:23 am
**In response to Michael Coate's statement that "2001: A Space Odyssey" never played at White City Cinema in Shrewsbury, Ma. I need to reply that no matter what the newpaper advertisement states, the fact is that the movie never played at Showcase Cinemas on Southbridge St. in Worcester. Perhaps there may have been a bidding war happening at the time of publication and White City Cinema won out over Showcase. I'm sticking to my guns on this one because I was there.**

bulzi…you’re not a nutcase, are you?! You’re starting to remind me of budyboy100. :-)

There are plenty of verifiable sources to support my claim that in its original first-run, reserved-seat Worcester engagement “2001: A Space Odyssey” ran at SHOWCASE CINEMAS and not at WHITE CITY. Here’s one reference. Here’s another.

Also consider that “2001” was initially released exclusively to Cinerama theaters (as this article details), of which SHOWCASE CINEMAS was the only such venue in Worcester.

Another verifiable fact is that the third movie to play WHITE CITY, (despite your insistence it was “2001”) was “Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?” which began on 06/29/66 and followed “The Sound Of Music’s” 53-week run. (At this point in time, “2001” hadn’t even been made!)

Dude, just deal with it, you’re simply misremembering what occured. What you probably are remembering is a re-release or return engagement that took place years later. It’s human nature and not uncommon to misremember details, especially those from several decades past.
