From the name, this theatre would appear to have been a temporary CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) project. The CCC was a Depression-era New Deal program which enrolled young unmarried men 18-24 to do restoration work like planting trees and soil reclamation.

This is how I remember the theatre in the late 1940’s and early 50’s. Nice to see it again.

Once again, a little skimpy info on the location. We’re talking about Tacoma, the city in Washington State, right? As pointed out previously, it’s a big country.

Nowhere in the above article is it mentioned that this theatre is located in Woodstock, Illinois. One has to actually read the newspaper article to determine the location.

In the photo, the posters in the front of the theatre appear to be advertising movies, so maybe it was open at that time. The cars place the picture as being taken in the mid-1930s or later.

Trolleyguy commented about Route 66 Movie Theatre on Oct 20, 2015 at 3:42 pm

According to the theatre website, “The building once served as the Newland Hotel before becoming a movie theater managed by Dickinson Theaters in 1945. After being sold it sat empty for many years but was restored by a local family music group in 1999. They renamed the theater the Route 66 Music Theatre with live music as the primary source of entertainment. It was sold and renovated in 2003, but the theater closed again after less than a year. However, the screen didn’t stay dark for long. It was purchased in 2005 by Nancy and Scott Hutson.”

In the early 60’s, I worked at a shoe store just north of this theatre, at 1306 S Halsted. The marquee was gone by then, but the building still showed signs of having been a movie theater.
