personally I think the Rotunda’s screenings of Shrek 2/Ice Age 2 shouldn’t be “free” but “pay what you can” and not just expect people to donate as suggested on the Senator/Rotunda’s website. One would hope they’d donate, but … free is technically free.

it’s would be interesting to compare Senator Community Trust, to say The Avalon Theatre Project here in DC and see why and how the latter can currently raise over 1.25 Million dollars for planned future renovations and yet the Baltimore community is being less coroperative, where they burned by the last plea for donations, only to find out $900,000 was still owed?

“For those of you on the Senator’s email list, they’ve sent out the word that they are about to shut down and be auctioned off. I sent the news link to this site but it has yet to post. Now, it makes sense as to why they put up the donation link. Today, in an even stranger turn of events, they took down the donation link! Are they resigning themselves to the inevitability of closure and being sold?

is the Senator really throwing the towell this quickly… that’s a shame. Auctioning off seems rather severe, it’s a shame there’s no community support, such as the Avalon Theatre Project that was created here in the District in order to save that theatre.

instead of the promised IMAX screen (AMC has stalled some theatres that were originally planned for conversion), maybe AMC should just invest in the less costly Sony LCoS 4K systems (which now can playback 3D films).

I don’t know if this true or not, but I thought I read somewhere that the theatres in the LA area, in general, set the noise level a tad higher than other national chain theatres?

I think though the theatres that were chosen were not for the overall presentation factor but the programming. I gather these theatres make a consertive effort in bucking the trend and offer films that not the mainstream or the most current batch from Hollywood. That’s why it kind of surprised me that the AFI Silver theatre didn’t make it considering the old theatre was pretty much retained, but also added two other auditoriums AND features one of the nation’s premier Documentary Film Festivals: Silverdocs (and the annual European Union Film Festival – which gets better every year). The inclusion of the Zeigfeld and Arclight reflect that both mainstream and classic co-exist (something that the Uptown doesn’t and haven’t done in quite some time)

one thing the Avalon did, as well as the AFI, was have people purchase a seat and their name placked onto the seat, I have one at the Avalon (that was a birthday gift), maybe something like that would be beneficial to the Senator and guaranteed a set amount per person who contributed to the Senator.

personally I’d like to see someone other than AMC run the Uptown here in DC, there really needs to be way to book and present classic films on the big screen for the Uptown ‘experience’

oh that was me regarding the AFI Silver – sorry for the wrong info.

“Strange that Radio City Music Hall in New York City didn’t make the list. I realize that it’s now classified as a performing arts center, but so is the Oakland Paramount, which did get listed.”

Similiarily, the Paramount in Charlottesville, Virginia, is also a performing arts center but is also set up for film presentation (complete with surround sound speaker setup). Films during the annual Virginia Film Festival look and sound great… and the theatre is really beautiful.

$1 for popcorn! oh I’m SOOOOOOO there. I can’t remember if it’s Regal or AMC but one day of the week, certain concession items are at a reduced price for ‘members’

what the dimensions of the screen?

Giles
Giles commented about 10 best movie theaters in America on Mar 10, 2009 at 10:46 am

despite the fact that there are no special engagements, the projector bulb is dimming and recent 35mm prints looked like $#%@, movies on the the massive 70 foot screen at DC’s Uptown Theatre still packs a wallop.

Too bad that the AFI Silver didn’t make the list considering many filmmakers SAY it’s one of the best in the country.

Giles commented about Senator Theatre on Mar 10, 2009 at 10:34 am

no I don’t think the AFI/Silver is non-profit. The Avalon theatre in DC is a non-profit. Even though the trend is directed toward’s digital projection, I think it’s beneficial for theatres, like the AFI Silver that is equipped to playback 35mm, 70mm and DLP (or Sony 4K LCoS digital projection – which is essential for very large screen theatres)

^ But films like UP! and AVATAR will be the stand-out 3D films of the year.

Giles commented about 3D Projection meets small town cinema on Mar 4, 2009 at 12:10 pm

question: how much is the current price of converting a theatre to 3D Digital projection. I thought there was some sort of consortium formed to bring down the price to smaller, independent theatres interested in making the transition.

‘some’ shots were shot with 4K cameras for QUANTUM, I know of only movie that was shot completely in 4K and that was LeVar Burton’s REACH FOR ME.

Giles commented about AMC to build 100 digital IMAX screens on Mar 3, 2009 at 3:39 pm

AMC are hypocrites in my opinion, news that there promised Tysons Corner IMAX Digital screen is now pushed back some 8 months and given the vague TBD date: ‘sometime in the summer’ – get your priorities sorted out here AMC. I know I’m a broken record on this topic, but AMC’s cred is seriousily lacking.

the now speculated IMAX-Digital installation date is a vague: ‘sometime in the Summer’

Giles
Giles commented about AMC Tysons Corner 16 on Mar 3, 2009 at 2:11 pm

nope, another IMAX (Digital) film to not be presented as such (‘Watchmen’), this is ridiculous. Wow – unreal, what a loss, they aren’t getting my money cause I’ll be trekking over to Hoffman instead. We may be in a recession at the moment and an IMAX-Digital installation might not be high priority at the moment for AMC, but this dragging out of a promised screen seems like a broken promise.

Giles commented about AMC Rockaway 16 on Mar 3, 2009 at 2:06 pm

“Regal doesn’t seem to be having difficulty upgrading to digital at a very quick pace. Regal has some all digital complexes and are upgrading one or two screens in most remodels. No mater what your opinions about DLP it is going to happen.” – mhvbear

aside from a coupld new 3D DLP units Regals in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area, the rollout of standard non-3D systems is a snail pace. The industry want’s to think theatres will upgrade to Digital, but with the recession, theatres aren’t actually letting the floodgates open to this national installation.

I’d love to see a 70mm print of ‘The Muppet Movie’ the 35mm print I saw last year at the AFI Silver was a cropped grainey looking one.
