The blue neon on the marquee has been repaired, and tonight is OPENING NIGHT!
(Although I have seen “Dreamgirls” already, for $3.00 I certainly will see it again. And I haven’t yet caught “Night at the Museum.”
I hope to meet some of my fellow bloggers to this site there.
WHAT A GREAT DAY FOR DORMONT! The owners of the used book store and the Dor-Stop Restaurant have told me they are planning to stay open longer to benefit from some of the theater crowds.
Now we can all work to save the South Hills/Cinema 4, as suggested by “thespian110” above.
Friday night times are as follows, 5:15 Night at the museum, 7:45 Dreamgirls.
Saturday and Sunday times are, Noon and 5:15 Night at the museum, 2:30 and 7:45 Dreamgirls.
Admission is $3.00.

After 10 years, March 30th the HOLLYWOOD finally returns. Dreamgirls.
Neon marquee damaged (broken) by falling ice.
Posters for the opening attraction have been put in the new cases. It is “Dreamgirls.” Rumor has it that the theater will open on Friday, March 23.
As of Friday March 16th finishing touches are being made. The new marquee looks GREAT lit at night. I have new images of new marquee,
in my last comment i mentioned that the new marque looks sharp. but once it was installed on the front of building, i noticed that you can’t read it. too light for daytime. i have not seen it lit at night yet. new images available.

Hello! I am a student at the University of Pittsburgh and am writing an article on the re-opening of the Hollywood Theater for my journalism class. I need to interview some members of the Dormont community, and was wondering if anyone would be willing to do a brief phone interview with me (five or ten minutes is fine!) about the theater. I’ve noticed that some of you have quite a bit of knowledge about the renovations that are going on, so I’d be particularly interested in talking to you. A brand new poster case with a “Coming Soon” sign near the bottom was installed on the outside yesterday, replacing the old one that had been damaged by vandals. Hopefully they will put up one or two more that announce “Now Playing.”
As of Feb 12th, seats are installed, concession stand delivered but not totally installed.
No projector as of yet.
I have current images as of feb 12th.
Cinema Consultants & services International of Pittsburgh will start installing projection and sound equipment on Monday, February 5th.
The theatre will be equipped with a Century JJ 35/70mm projector,
Dolby Digital & JBL Sound, a digital video projector for HD-video presentations as well as all pre-show programs.
They are also installing new Seating Concepts high backed rocking theatre seats, a new Stein Industries concession counter, new blue wall drapes, new carpeting with L.E.D. floor lighting, a new Tecnicote screen and new black screen masking.
The construction is still progressing. The front of the theater has been repainted and the front doors and the side exit doors on the front have been sanded and varnished. There is now a new wall at the back of the enlarged lobby/concession area, so I can’t see into the auditorium through the glass in the front doors any more. It probably will be March or April before it is finished. Interested patrons can have a seat plaque with their name for $150.00 – see the flyer in the window of Fredo’s Deli/Coffee Shop next door for details.

Work is comming along, major electrical problems. No seats as of yet. Just started painting the ceiling and recovering the walls. I have some interesting shots in the projection room, basement etc. Also found an old movie poster, and an old refreshment stand popcorn sign. Any offers?
May open in April, if lucky.

This week a new wall for the back of the auditorium has been erected inside. The old wall between the lobby and the theater area itself was torn down, and with the new wall, the lobby is approximately twice as large as it was. That’s all I can see by looking through the one window pane in the front doors.
The theater is still being remodeled. The original article in the paper says it would be completed by the holidays, but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen. The construction is moving at a slow pace, but I do see workmen in and out on a regular basis.
(I live across the street and down one block and will keep this website informed of changes.)
Any word on what’s been happening lately with this place? I lived in Pittsburgh from 1990-1995 and specifically on Los Angeles Avenue at Neeld Avenue from 1990-1991. This was in Pittsburgh proper, but very close (walking distance) to this theatre.
Too many other theaters sit empty (Denis, Parkway, Eastland, New Granada, South Hills). Something needs done to reopen them up and use them as theaters (movies, performing arts)
If this is true that the Hollywood Theater has been saved, hooray for Pittsburgh. This horriable place of a city has finally got it crap together and saved a landmark. Pittsburgh prides itself on its history but does nothing to protect it or preserve it. A sad shame that this great theater had to sit empty for so long. I attended many films in this theater as a kid and travelled by trolly car to the theater. I miss this bad. Pittsburgh, you need to look and smell the flowers, no wonder the downtown is a closed mess and everyone wants out. I hear Saks Fifth Avenue is next to go. Good for them. Look what you let happen to the Mellon Bank Building, and now kaufmans. Shame on all of you. Congrats to the Hollywood.
An update. Theater was gutted, balcony seats ripped out and thrown in a dumpster. Old Hollywood sign also destroyed. Too bad. My friend Clint “MAN” had his first kiss there (with a breeder) back in 74.
