Local619 commented about Kailua Drive-In on Mar 9, 2008 at 3:01 pm

Kailua Drive In was located on Kaapa Quarry Road at Kalanianaole Highway in Kailua Hawaii.

The entrance was a long up hill drive way that paralleled Kaapa Quarry Road . The site is now occupied by the Le Jardine Academy (green roofed buildings in aerial) http://www.lejardinacademy.com/ from the aerial photo below it appears that the same drive is used.

Local619 commented about Cerberus 1-2-3 on Jan 27, 2008 at 2:21 pm

The Cerberus occupied an old building that had been a multi level, city Automobile (Ford)dealership earlier. The three theatres were served by a common projection room, each theatre had twin Century projectors with Strong Xenon lamps (Magnarc type housings) and auto changovers. The projection room was a level above the theatres and used a series of front surface mirrors as periscopes to project the picture. “Hi Fi” stereo, MacIntosh Amps were installed to show “Woodstock” in 4ch Magnetic sound.

Was in the Crosstown in 1969 to see the local(Projectionist Union) Business Agent, they were running Oliver in 70mm. Was told that Elvis had rented the theatre for a midnight show for himelf and some friends. Rumor was that he was a big tipper (staff loved him)

Local619 commented about Central Theatre on Dec 14, 2007 at 6:57 pm

The Central Theatre is listed in the 1960 Yellow Pages under “Stanley Warner Theatres”> The 1961 Yellow Pages do not list it, all of the other Stanly Warner Theatres are listed but not the Central.

Worked the booth at the Gayety in 1971 or 72.. booth seemed an afterthought, hanging from the ceiling with access via a ladder up the back wall. Balcony was closed, follow spor was located at fron rail of balcony.
Theatre was a grand old house, big marble stair ways on each side of lobby (closed off), much ornate plasterwork in ceiling. Had been a very nice theatre in it’s day.

Local619 commented about Bradlick Theatre on Dec 10, 2007 at 7:46 am

Re: Address.. Everyone is right. All are speaking of different points in time.
Bradlick Shopping center is at the intersection of the 5100 block of BackLICK Rd and the 6900 block of BRADdock Rd appears that in the past addresses were assigned to the stores per the road they faced. Also a Bradlick address vs actual street was sometimes used (there is no Bradlick street or road)
In the past the theatre could have been 5105 Backlick Road (Ben Franklin store, next to theatre was 5125)
Now all of the addresses used are Braddock Road Addresses. 5105 is a group of office condos just north of the shopping center(Fairfax County tax records) & maps)

Local619 commented about Trans-Lux Theatre on Dec 5, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Worked the Trans-Lux a few times.. had a conventional booth, front screen, with Brinkert equipment.

Second floor of the theatre was divided into thirds the Eastern third (screen was on South wall) had an office then a cat walk through an equipment (ventilation)room, the booth was the center third. A viewing room (cry room?) was the Western third. The viewing room had several rows of seats (dozen??) with a side entrance into the booth but the main entrance was from the lobby stairway of the office building over the theatre. Great place to watch a movie from.. saw Jack Lemmon in “The Out of Towner’s” there..

Local619 commented about Lee Theatre on Dec 5, 2007 at 11:07 am

The Lee Theatre was part of the “Neighborhood of Virginia” chain. Address/house number re-alignment in the late 50s/ early 60s render the “Washington Street” (Falls Church) address as non-existent, the theatre site is now labeled as Lee Highway (Arlington County).

The Drive-in on Route 7 by the old Washington-Virginia airport is the Sunset Drive-in.. Believe that is a Falls Church (Fairfax County) Address.. AKA Bailey’s Cross Roads.

Local619 commented about DuPont Theater on Dec 3, 2007 at 3:16 pm

The booth ran Simplex E-7s and Peerless Magnarcs.. Above the booth was a low fan room..

The office building had a manual elevator so at midnight the Projectionist had to call the elevator and have an operator bring him down to the ground floor..

Due to the long Narrow auditorium the lenses had a very long focal length, thusly making the focus sharp as a razor..

Local619 commented about DuPont Theater on Dec 3, 2007 at 3:13 pm

I worked as Projectionist at the old Dupont in the summer of 1970. The theatre had a long and narrow auditorium with a long narrow lobby next (North) to it. The office building that housed the Dupont was on the South side of Dupont Circle, West side of Conn Ave, East side of 19th St but only half of the block, not all the way to “N” St at the new building is.. The theatre was at the South, widest end.. The booth was entered through the office building and the door looked like an office.. upon entering the “office” there was a foyer with a rest room and to the left was a steep metal stair half a flight down to the actual booth, there was a slanted ladder (emergency exit on the right) a small kitchenette opposite the rest room.. on the booth level was a generator room (North side kinda under the stairs).. on the South side of the booth, more room due to lader, not stairs, was a re-wind and work room, all with heavy (nitrate) fire doors.
