Hello all,

I am doing a large-scale research project on adult theatres and would be very interested to hear from anything who either worked at or attended this theatre during its time showing adult films. If you would like to help me out, you can email me at .

Thanks!

This theatre actually opened as the Hollywood and became the Coronet in 1956, when it became the city’s second full-time “prestige” theatre, showing foriegn language and art films.

i had the chance to look around this theatre recently. I have some photos (i am not much of a photog, clearly) here – http://www.flickr.com/photos/68845915@N06/sets/72157627927062486/with/6258821589/

The place is in very nice shape inside. But I would bet the farm that it never reopens.

I do stand corrected, the Wright was on the corner of EAST Wright and N Fratney.

This theatre opened at the Park in 1909. It had 200 seats and closed in 1922. The building is no longer standing.

In the fall of 1978, it was reported that an out-of-state church had purchased purchased the theatre to use a venue for Christian films. It must not have done real well, as it would razed less than a year later.

The Lincoln was closed for many years before it reopened in 1966 showing adult films under the named “Lincoln Fine Art Theatre.” The vice squad closed them down that spring when they booked a nudist film. To my knowledge, it never reopened after that.

Does anyone know who the final operator of the Princess was? Or anyone who might have owned the property during its XXX days?

Matthew Prigge commented about Puerto Rico Theatre on Aug 14, 2010 at 7:57 pm

The theatre ran its last film in mid-1971 as near as I can tell. during the last year it was open, it was known as the Magik Grand, and showed old classics and experimental films, as well as a steady diet of adult features. At one point, its ads boasted that it was “Milwaukee’s Matinee Adult Theatre,” showing porn from noon until 6 or 7 pm. I didn’t find anything that ever refered to it as the Puerto Rico.

Although I am not sure if there is still a screen at the Capitol, there is still a projector and platter system in the booth. However, I doubt it is still functional. I know the Strand used to go to the Capitol for spare parts when their stuff would break down. There was also a trailer for “Crocodile Dundee 2” amoung the debris in the projection booth. Given that movie’s release date (May 1988), it might still be there from the active days of the theatre.

This theatre was also closed for a while in the late 50’s and 60’s. Probably a rare example of one of the big houses that closed and later re-opened as a first-run cinema. I was told that the first film shown upon its re-opening was “That’s Entertainment!”

If the interstate took out the area on which the Wright stood, it would be WEST Wright street.

This has been a six screen theatre for some time now. The original house was split into three theatres, with the lower area split in the middle and the balcony becoming a small theatre of its own. A fifth screen was added, and later two more in what was the parking lot. I worked as a manager here about ten years ago and I remember hearing that the theatre was re-opened in the seventies, so it might have been closed down for a while. At one time, the six theatres were named after old theatres in Manitowoc (the Capitol, Orpheum, other I do not recall), although this never really took and they were always refered to as theatre 1, theatre 2, etc.
