The property is being sold again according to today’s edition of www.bxtimes.com which indicated it could end up as an outlet mall as originally planned but from a new owner.

To the above, agree with you 1000%. Hopefully the rumor of AMC going into the Whitestone Cinema property as part of the Paragon Outlet mall are true, BUT there is no activity there and the project is not listed on Paragon’s website. The area next to the Deegan southbound where two separate retail projects emerged would have been an excellent theater location…

This theater’s exterior is briefly shown in “Cotton Comes to Harlem” which was on Bounce TV Channel 41.3 a few weeks back and will likely be repeated a few more times as with all their films…

fred1,

If you have any friends at Bow Tie, tell them that other areas of the Bronx are ripe for a theater such as the area next to the southbound Deegan above Fordham Road where two new retail projects are emerging. Also, if Regal pulled out of the downtown Yonkers retail project, they should take a look. The planned site is on Nepperhan Ave at New School Street. The area begs for a multiplex and had 3 single screens up until the 1970’s…

Went here the other day for the first time since Bow Tie took over and while the upstairs stinks, the sound and projection were both excellent. Interesting that they have found a matinee audience for the entire year which never was the case years back with this theater which I have patronized since the 1960’s when it was Skouras and later United Artists. Maybe the older, retired crowd is the bulk of the weekday matinee audience ???

Orlando, thank you for the info, was very curious if they were leasing or owned this property. And since they owned it and sold it for $ 22.5 million, imagine what they paid for it in the 1950’s!!! Same with their Bronx, Whitestone property that was sold last year.

Scott Neff

FYI: National Amusements does not own it Yonkers and Hawthorne, NY locations, but does own the entire property of their Greenburgh Multiplex in Elmsford, NY. Still wondering if they willingly broke their lease or not at this Valley Stream location…

Did they terminate their lease earlier than it’s official end date??? If so, then maybe they were not making enough money to continue operating it…

I just read the story in queenscourier.com and wondered why won’t the major studios license him anymore major product if “American Sniper” fails?? This is the only theater for many miles so what do the distributors have to lose by licensing the owner more feature films???

They probably were waitng for the lease to expire and had to take on this theater from Clearview along with several others that were underperforming such as the locations in Yonkers and Mamaroneck…

P.S.—The entire downstairs interior has been fully demolished. Even if the Ridge HIll Cinema did not open, not sure if this theater was still viable or not…Lohud.com reported yesterday that the developer of the former Tarrytown GM property wants to include a movie theater..

dave-bronx, lernerproperties.com still has 17.5K of space for lease on their website after another 17.5k was apparently leased or optioned. Heard from a store owner that a gym may occupy part of the theater. GUESSING that a gym could occupy the upstairs as was done with the UA White Plains with another tenant downstairs. The balcony stairway was demolished. Guessing that an ADA compliant elevator will be installed when the property is leased. Got a peek inside months backl and saw what is left of the unearthed lobby waterfall!!!

amcbayplaza13, Thank you for your posting. FYI: The plan for a theater at the planned Kingsbridge Armory Mall died when that project was voted down by the City Council. An ice rink is opening there instead…I thought you said AMC was building a 25 plex at the Whitestone?? Now it’s only going to be 17 screens with IMAX???

To the above, Regal is considering selling it’s theaters, so for now it’s not likely they are building any new ones. And did you actually hear that they want to build at Hunt’s Point?? Same with Cinemark??

Are you speculating, or did you actually hear this from elsewhere?? National Amusements had planned to build a theater in the original Kingsbridge Armory retail project that was voted down a few years back.

Many Thanks, hope you are right!!!

It makes sense that another multiplex would open in the Whitestone property. BUT…if AMC does open there, will they still keep their Bay Plaza multiplex???

Another area in the northwest Bronx that absolutely begs for a cinema is in one of those two new retail projects located next to the Deegan Expressway where Stella a Doro used to be.

John, defintely agree with all your comments. FYI: Rumor says another theater will open in the former Whitestone Cinema site as part of the Paragon Outlet Mall project opening there in 2016. Betting that National Amusements is the operator and Da' Bronx still needs more screens.

optimist008 commented about 4-D movies coming to L.A. on Apr 10, 2014 at 5:29 pm

They were planning to open up in the Kingsbridge Armory, Bronx with developer Young Woo Associates as part of a mixed use plan which fell through when NYC instead chose a hockey related development for the armory property. When the Daily News first reported this, nothing was stated about another theater chain providing the 4D theater for CJ Group. When Related Companies wanted to develop the armory in 100% retail, National Amusements was rumored as the theater operator. That plan died as aresult of the living wage issue. The Bronx urgently needs more screens !!!!

Joe Vogel, Once again, many thanks for another informative back issue link. The great details that General Cinema took with it theaters still seems unmatched anywhere. I briefly worked for them in the mid 1970’s-Hartsdale, NY.
