Thank you for everyone’s comments. Again, if you love the classics, I urge you to drop an e-mail to Craig. There is a 70mm print of ‘West Side Story" out there with restored 6 track. Wouldn’t you like to see THAT at the Ziegfeld??
Sound of Music was early last December.
I could be wrong, but I believe that “The Sound of Music” was briefly revived sometime after that.

I think the last classics shows were in February 2010 – the last ones I went to anyway. I remember going to “Funny Girl” and “West Side Story”. If there were any more since then, I’m sure Gary will let us know.
Adding photos can become addictive, can’t it? I spent one night doing it last month, and didn’t stop until the sun was coming up, around 5:30 AM. Good thing I was off work the next day.
Hey Bill… I only wish that some of my shots were better quality images. Unfortunately, I shot those on a camera that is inferior to the digital SLR I now have! Anyway, I’ve been spending marathon sessions uploading hundreds of photos I have on my computer – mostly from 2005-2007. Uploaded this batch last night along with a number of photos for the Hollywood Theatre in Times Square and a few other cinemas. At some point during that session, we hit the 10,000 photo mark! Too bad #10,000 couldn’t have been one from the Ziegfeld!
So… no word from Craig on the possibility for future classics series? I know the schedule is looking auspiciously full with new releases in the coming weeks. How long has it been since the last round of classics?
To Ed Solero: You’ve covered the great Ziegfeld from every conceivable angle! Thanks so much for posting those photos.
Actually, it was earlier in 2006-check it out here, that’s when they gave out cards asking for titles, and I added about 20 more films as suggestions, one of them was “Close Encounters” which was the first I intoduced.

Gary are you sure the first classic festival was the Fall of 2006? I seem to recall March of 2005, but maybe I’m mistaken.

Hi Craig:
Happy July 4th. I’m always looking ahead—this Christmas time, two Spielberg films will be opening, and he directed both-“The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse.” Hopefully at least one of them will be at the Ziegfeld.
But, in anticipation, looking back at the classics, I think there’s always some downtime at the Ziegfeld in the Fall, and showing some classic Spielbergs would definitely bring in the people. This is the 30th anniversary of “Raiders” followed by the 30th of “Poltergeist” and “E.T.” There is nothing like seeing these on a big screen.
The TCM festival, for the last two years, has been drawing thousands of people to Hollywood (I was there in 2010) to see, believe it or not, “old” movies on the Big Screen.
When you showed the three (now four) “Indiana Jones” movies a few years ago, the people who saw them originally, now wanted to bring their kids.

While I’m at it, I have to recommend an absolute must which will NOT be at the Ziegfeld, but should be—“Another Earth,” opening on July 20th or 22nd. I’ve already seen it twice in previews, and will be back for more—one of the most interesting, original, thought-provoking, well acted and written films you will see this year. A big hit at Sundance, and, I think, next Oscar time.

I’m seeing it at another theater in the area. “Twilight Zone” is on netflix without commercials.

You double commented ziegfeldman. BTW, Transformers 3 is playing in 3D at this theater. I heard that the 3D was great. Would Clearview upgrade their projector to 4k like what AMC and Regal are doing in NYC? That would be a huge improvement.

Thanks Gary, I’ve spoken with Joe quite a few times myself and I echo your thoughts. He is indeed a professional and knows his business extremely well. I have spoken to him during many of the classic presentations as well and he’s always been very forthcoming with the ins and out of various projection issues, prints, etc… always an interesting conversation.

I want to help you out here. Call the theater (see my last post) and ask to speak to Joe, the projectionist. He is a supreme professional, has been in the business for years, is friendly and really knows his stuff.
He has always been helpful to me when I have introduced the classics, and I can’t say enough about him. I last saw him at one of the Met Opera HD presentations, and was shmoozing with him. He is very much from the “old school.” Ask him what you need to ask, he’s very proud of his profession.

I’d like to know for sure as well, but if I see two beams of light (as opposed to one) coming from the projector on the 15th, I’ll unfortunately have my answer!

Vito, I am confused by how you begin above. Projectors are Christie, yes?
I do not belive so Howard, in editing my post it looks like I suggested that Tom wrote the projectors at the Ziegfeld were Christie.
Ziegfeld has Christie projectors?
The Christie and NEC equipment have lenses that are easy to change, the touch of a button changes things. As Tom wrote, What I have been told is The Sony projectors are not as easy and sometimes when the lens is changed something goes out of alignment and the projector cannot be used until a tech spends 2 hours realigning the lens. In addition, the lens which can weigh about 20 lbs. are a bit of a pain to change for a a non professional projectionist. Four half inch bolts hold the lens in the projector, you need a socket with a short extension to get the job done but it takes two to change the lens, one to hold it and the other to unbolt it, which leads to the danger of a very expensive lens falling to the floor. Then there is the problem with the silver screen not reflecting light back like a matte screen. If you are sitting too far to one side the other side of the screen looks dark.
