I can’t wait until LS gets recliners like its sister theater, the 84th street six, did a few years ago, in all of its screens.

Giles- I will certainly prefer the 12-channel sound system over Dolby Atmos. I heard it’s much more powerful than the current digital IMAX sound system. Can’t wait to experience it.

waterguy56 – I’ll be very curious what your thoughts are on IMAX’s new 12-channel sound system (if and when the system debuts with the conversion to laser), while it’s not as great as Dolby Atmos, it’s a definite improvement in terms of competing with Atmos and standard 7.1 surround sound.

That’s true. Only BvS(shot in IMAX camera, show in 70mm, and about 25mins of the scenes will fill the entire screen) and A beautiful Planet(in 70mm, but somehow I heard it will not fill the entire screen because it was shot in Canon Digital Camera, so probably 1.85:1?)will be the true IMAX experience at LS13 this year. But this kind of film is just so rare too see. All the others are just fake/digital IMAX. But they are still better than the screens downstairs. IMAX is just better in many ways(sound, brightness, resolution….)

Hello-

this past weekend I saw Zootopia in IMAX-3D which I thoroughly enjoyed. to which a question. the only movie I have seen in this theater whether just IMAX
or IMAZ-3D that filled the entire screen was Fantasia 2000 released in Feb. of that year. the section of the screen taken up by Zootopia seemed using my eye as a no bigger than the screen of the Loew’s auditorium downstairs. in other words I don’t see the point of showing a film in this auditorium unless it fills the entire screen.

A poster of A beautiful Planet was actually inside the IMAX auditorium hallway when I went there yesterday. This should indicate they are going to show it.

Thanks xbs2034. very excited to hear what you just said. Can’t wait to “board the international space station” lol. another thing I like about the laser system is the recliner chair. I believe the experience(space, BvS fighting scenes) would be much better with those chairs' “shaking devices”.

I would assume A Beautiful Planet will play at Lincoln Square. I checked and it isn’t going to be playing at the Museum of Natural History right away (as I’ve said, this follows the typical roll-out of IMAX produced documentaries which usually play multiplexes first and museums later) and if they are going through all the expense of creating and projecting a print for the premiere, don’t see why they wouldn’t also use it for a one week run. And yes these documentaries typically are 1.44 for the entire runtime and some of the best IMAX experiences.

Actually one thing which really excites me about the laser system beyond the sound is a 24/7 remote monitoring system which will constantly check for any projection or sound errors (even ones which could be upcoming). I’ve seen a couple showings with issues in the digital IMAX years, and this should solve that and ensure the best presentation whenever possible.

70mm > laser! Except the sound system maybe. I checked Eileen Campbell’s message, she only said the premiere of A Beautiful Planet will be hosted at LS13. does this also mean they are going to show it for one week before Civil War? I hope they will do it, this film will be 1.44:1 ratio for the whole 45 mins right? Must be amazing to see at Ls13.

xbs2034 on March 4, 2016 at 10:16 pm

Also, as I expected, Eileen Campbell has confirmed A Beautiful Planet will indeed play in 70mm IMAX at Lincoln Square. She specifically mentions that and BvS when saying why they reinstalled the 70mm projector, so Civil War and others will likely be in digital.

Giles: yes, but that would be part of the whole laser renovation, and indeed factors into why that renovation takes weeks. Right now they are just reinstalling the old 70mm IMAX projector they removed when they thought they were going to do laser soon and never need it again, but the plan changed as a laser installation isn’t happening at least for a while (IMAX says late summer now, but we’ve seen them delay it multiple times before)

it also takes a few days if not a week or so to add the ceiling speakers in the IMAX-laser speaker configurement

xbs2034: Thanks so much for the info!!!!! Yeah, Zootopia is on sale! BTW, they did not cancel any IMAX shows this weekend. I guess it’s still early to move the 70mm projector in. But it’s certainly way too late to put up tonight’s schedule this morning

Have only been there one time in 2016 for Deadpool, can’t wait to go there this weekend for Zootopia and the new IMAX at AMC pre show which I saw once in Deadpool! Things are changing from March on, Cloverfield, Diverent Series, BvS, Jungle Book, A beautiful Planet, Civil War……will be so excited to catch all these IMAX movies at its IMAX theater.

xbs2034
xbs2034 on March 3, 2016 at 10:38 am

They now have Zootopia IMAX 3D shows up for the weekend, only Thursday (today) seems to have canceled IMAX shows. Also while I do think reinstalling the projector will take at least half a day, once they have it in they will probably use the rail system they had before, which can move a film or digital projector into place in a matter of minutes.

waterguy56
waterguy56 on March 2, 2016 at 9:30 pm

If it takes days to install the projector, showing Jungle Book will be very very unlikely. It just doesn’t make sense to switch to digital projector for the Jungle Book, and then switch back to 70mm again for A beautiful Planet.:((((

Indeed it is interesting that there is no IMAX scheduled for this weekend when all the other screens seem to have their showtimes up.

Could be still deciding between Zootopia and Deadpool, or perhaps they have to cancel some shows to reinstall the 70mm projector (the IMAX screen will be hosting the premiere of 10 Cloverfield Lane on March 8th, and they will also be doing early screenings of BvS here, so this might be the ideal time for that).

I guess no Zootopia IMAX at LS13 this week, they still have not put up the tickets for sale. Deadpool 4 straight weeks? If so, this will be the 4th IMAX movie to be missed at its IMAX theater in just 2 months.

Now, I’m also worried LS13 is very likely to throw away the Jungle Book in IMAX as well. Given the popularity and huge box office of Batman vs Superman, especially in 70mm format, Lots of people will be going to LS13, and 20 days(before April 15) of showing it just won’t be enough! While all the other IMAX theaters have already started the advance tickets for Jungle Book, and given they did not show so many IMAX movies recently, I’m worried Jungle Book won’t be in its IMAX on April 15th!!! Will be extremely disappointed if this really happens, have been waiting for The Jungle Book for months!!

Just to further confimr According to IMAX.com batman vs superman is indeed being released in 70mm IMAX and is in fact playing in that format at lincoln square.

I had a chance to check out the IMAX laser projector at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. I’m a believer now, definitely looking forward to laser at Lincoln Square!

^ 5 perf and 15 perf 70mm systems have nothing in common – the latter takes a huge amount of room, something I highly doubt the projection room at the Ziegfeld could accommodate.

xbs2034
xbs2034 on February 27, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Also, the regular 70mm projector the Ziegfeld had is a different system from an IMAX 70mm projector

The Film Society of Lincoln Center reported that they got the Ziegfeld equipment.

Any chance they got the 70 MM projector from the Ziegfeld?

xbs2034

Jungle Book certainly won’t be in 70mm and I bet Civil War won’t either (despite having 20 minutes filmed with IMAX cameras).

Even if a theater has a 70mm projector in place (and if Lincoln reinstalls this, I’m sure they are still not removing their digital projector until laser comes in), a studio still has to provide a 70mm print, which many are reluctant to do when those costs tens of thousands to make vs $150 or so to provide a digital IMAX copy.
