I went here in 6th grade (1985).I had no idea it was ever a movie theatre…i did borrow $5 from my friend Nils and forgot about it until now (so how much is $5 after 22 years really worth?)

Greenpoint commented about Loew's Kings Theatre to be saved on Nov 15, 2006 at 5:43 pm

The King was featured in the 1995 film Sleepers, which was coincidentally filmed in my neighborhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY.
The black gangster who was helping Brad Pitt and his friends convict the ex-detentional facility guards, who raped them as minors.

Its awesome that they saved The King…I can’t wait to jump on the bus and check out a flick or two….I miss the Commodore more and more each day=-I would totally be there every weekend for $6 a
double-feature.(RIP Commodore Theatre-2001)

Kudos to The King,
Greenpoint!

Greenpoint commented about Search of former Philadelphia theater discovers silent film treasures on Nov 15, 2006 at 5:34 pm

That is so amazing! I love hearing that kind of stuff-Silent film was a true artform. I was watching a tv documentary about Making a Silent Film.It pointed out how you could have had construction or other decible blaring noise going on in the backround… when you were filming and it wouldn’t intefere with the film!

Quiet on the set indeed!

Good Job everybody! We need to keep these theatres around!
They are our cinematic history!
We cannot let them disintergrate as old films have and continue.
The memories might fade but we can’t allow these legends to!

Greenpoint commented about Forum Theatre on Aug 2, 2006 at 9:03 am

Greenpoint to the rescue- I passed by this theatre all the time on my route.I always wondered if there was anything theatre related here-it did boast the tell-tale signs of a movie theatre-that being the huge auditorium in the back.

I do that kind of theatre-hunting all the time.I drive the
other people nuts because I always park the van and get out and walk around the perimeter of the building looking at old steel girders that must have held up old ornate theatre-marquis

Lost Memory I’m sure you will agree with me that at least this theatre didnt fall into disrepair as the Loews Paradise did (prior to its extensive rehabilitaion)with its leaky cielings from a hole in the roof that was never repaired.

Greenpoint commented about Chopin Theatre on Aug 2, 2006 at 8:36 am

Attention:
okay I must correct some of your misconceptions about the relationship of Club Exit to the Chopin. The Chopin was on the bottom floor..Club Exit is on the top floor, Club Exit encompasses what used to be a bingo parlor.Club Exit:It has never been on the first floor.Trust me on this one, I am a lifelong Greenpoint resident who used to frequent the Chopin as a little kid and hangs out at Club Exit as an adult.I know my stuff.

Hi Gilbert,
When I was 12 me and my uncle rented a beach house in Bradley Beach and would often check out movies here, its great to hear (or technically see) someone make reference to this treasure.

Greenpoint commented about Baronet Theatre on Apr 25, 2006 at 1:03 pm

“The Fast Lane nightclub next door…"seems to be a bowling alley, last week after the after-party (please forgive the word-redundancy) it appeared that they were projecting a movie above the lanes.

Word on the street:A certain musician uses this place for After-party’s anytime concerts are played up the block at the Asbury Park Covention Hall.

Greenpoint commented about Commodore Cinemas on Feb 14, 2006 at 5:55 am

If the new owners just bought the theater in 2002 and turned around and offered to sell it for 3 million, it appears that their intention all along was to just sell the property at a profit and not renovate the theater or build anything to replace it. Sounds very similar to the Keith’s in Flushing.
posted by Lost Memory on Jul 14, 2005 at 10:12am

I Agree with you 100%…the real estate market in the Greenpoint-Williamsburgh area has went through the roof…realistically 3million
although extremely high is about what a parcel of land would run…
once demolished builders can build a 10 or 20 apartment complex chock-full of yuppies paying upwards of $2000 just for the privilege of living a block away from the J Train( one stop to Delancey Street -Lower East Side-hipster central)

And who suffers in the end, film goers like ourselves who dont really have a neighborhood theatre to call our own..Closest theatre for Greenpoint/Williamsburgh folk is the Kaufmann 14 in Astoria or the Center in Sunnyside..thats it.

Greenpoint commented about Chopin Theatre on Dec 31, 2005 at 10:14 pm

Hello,
Happy New Year to all my co-contributors on CinemaTreasures. org,
The Chopin had a bingo hall above it.
You used to have to go up a long flight of stairs…and when you got up there there were shopping carts for whatever strange reason…

me and my friends used to play a game …“outrun the shopping cart
rolling down the stairs”…once you cleared the forst landing you were home free, but if your cart tipped over onto its side, it would cease to roll…basic Greenpoint Physics 101.

I am in the process of drawing a map of the theatres layout, i remember it as if it were yesterday as opposed to some 20 years ago since it closed.

Sincerely,
Greenpoint

Hello Researcher,
I was in the Harem in 1994 and almost had a very bad experience in the downstairs mens room, luckily i ran out in time.

I remember actually passing by the Harem years after (cautiously as you could imagine)-Therefore I am going to give you a demolition estimate of between 1998 and 2000.
