The twin theatre in Gastonia that you were referring to was THE EASTRIDGE 1 & 2 THEATRES,which is NOT listed on this site, but will be avaliable soon. THE DIANE DRIVE-IN or U.S. 29 DRIVE-IN THEATRE is not listed on cinema treasures either, but will be soon.

Its a crying shame that PORGY AND BESS is not even released on DVD. I saw the re-release of this during a special screening of the film and it was shown in its original 70mm format and brilliant Technicolor. This was one of the top ten films of 1959,right up there with BEN-HUR,
NORTH BY NORTHWEST, SOME LIKE IT HOT, ON THE BEACH, THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, and
THE HORSE SOLDIERS

raysson commented about Charlotte Film Festival highlights actual 35mm film on Sep 26, 2009 at 4:20 pm

Does anybody know that the Park Terrace is celebrating its 45th Anniversary? The theatre opened to the public in May of 1964,and it is the oldest running movie theatre in Charlotte. A great place to showcase independent and upcoming films. A grand place to see good flick.

Wasn’t there another cinema located in Gastonia near the Gastonia Mall?

I do recall it was a four-screen or eight screen cinema that was located on the lower level of Gastonia Mall, owned and operated by Fairlane-Litchfeld Theatres and later on was acquired by United Artists Theatres chain before it became part of Consolidated Theatres.

The Grant’s Department Store at Lakewood Shopping Center closed in the mid-1970’s. It was one of two Grant’s stores in the Durham area(the other was over at Wellons Village also closed in the mid-1970’s) It was transformed into Carolina Office Supply, which took over the W.T. Grant Building until it closed in early 1991.

A Food Lion Grocer sits where the former Grant’s Department Store used to be. Also Carolina Office Supply at Lakewood Shopping Center.
The Woolworth’s at Lakewood closed its doors forever in early 1997.
A Thrift Store has been located in the former Woolworth’s Dept.Store.

The Kroger Grocer(which was next door to the Center Theatre)closed its doors in 1986,when it moved to a 47,000 square foot new supermarket that was over on Shannon Road next to South Square Mall.
It was briefly had another grocer there(Byrd’s Food Center)which didn’t last long due to the vacancy of a once great shopping plaza.
A Community Center sits where it was once occupied by Kroger.

The Center Theatre closed in 2001 by Carmike Cinemas. It was converted into a surplus store run by Duke University. That closed in early 2006. The theatre sits stand and now it has been turned into a community center and a church.

Who remembers a science fiction/horror flick called “The Dark”? Produced by Dick Clark and starred Cathy Lee Crosby and Casey Kasem?

raysson commented about 1979 was the year of the vampire! on Sep 2, 2009 at 12:43 pm

Wasn’t Vincent Price and Christopher Lee did a vampire flick back in 1979? I do recall seeing it when it played as a double feature at a local drive-in theatre.
1979 was the year I was in junior high school when the manager of this theatre didn’t even care if he let 13 and 14 year-olds into seeing an “R” rated film.

I’m glad this cinema had the decency of restoring classic films. I agree with the previous comment, why cut 30 whole minutes out of an epic movie? What an atrocity! A disgrace!

If you’re going to see the movie, see it the way it was MEANT to be seen…in a large theatre complete with a huge auditorium and a widescreen capable of showing films that were presented in full 70MM Ultra Panavision/Cinerama!

raysson commented about Cary’s first movie theater now community space on Jul 15, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I’m glad it was turned into a community space for social events.

The South Hills when it opened in 1973 was basically a single screen theatre, and was one of the first movie theatres in Cary.
It was twinned later on during the mid-to-late 1970’s.

It was also a discount movie house in the late 1980’s-early 1990’s until its closing in 1994.

There was another sequel for Batman called……

“Batman Returns” that roared into theatres in June of 1992. This one was probably the last one of the Batman installment that Tim Burton directed, before the franchise went into oblivion. This was also was the last one that brought back Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight taking on his most dangerous and deadliest foe:
“The Penguin”,played with icy precision by Danny DeVito. Also on board too were Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman. This one also broke boxoffice went it opened in the summer of 1992. “Batman Returns” also shown in selection theatres in its full 70MM-6 Track Dobly Stereo Presentations.

I recall seeing in 1975 “Jaws” on the marquee along at the time when the Yorktowne was becoming a twin cinema. The other movie on the marquee at the time was “The French Connection II”. The lines for “Jaws” were record breaking with sold-out shows and the lines stretching from the entrance to the theatre all the way toward the E.F. Hutton Building Parking Lot facing Bedford Street and Chapel Hill Boulevard.
