@waterguy: They are going to close the IMAX somewhere next week and then reopen with laser for Deadpool. So after Deadpool everything should be laser. But that’s just what I heard, they might change schedule.

Also, as much as I know, laser is also digital. Just different projector, but still digital files I think.

BTW, if you wanna check out something close to laser, AMC Empire 25 has a laser in their AMC prime theater.

Every IMAX theater in NYC is digital, that’s why. Only the 70mm IMAX is the real IMAX(I believe it only exists in museums now). Laser IMAX is good as well. Only 70mm and Laser can do 1:1.44 which fill up the entire screen. Digital can only display 2.35 or 1.85.correct me if I’m wrong.

@celboy – No it didn’t fill up the whole screen left to right. It was LieMAX. I can confirm that. Even the IMAX sequence still had black bars on all sides. I thought only the trailers were gonna be like that, but it turned out that the movie would be like that as well. I was so disappointed.

The IMAX scene on Jakku was basically a windowed 1.85 aspect ratio in the middle of the huge screen. Beyond lame and pathetic. I really wanted to watch this movie in IMAX 15/70 2D, but couldn’t as I live in New York. I also hate fake 3D (post-converted 3D). Those glasses were really starting to bother me. I wanted to take them off so badly.

It pisses me off how they promote this as “AN IMAX 3D EXPERIENCE” when it’s really not. They must think all of the moviegoers are stupid. They are robbing people.

Celboy, I haven’t seen the film in IMAX (seen it in Real D first, then Dolby Cinema), but people who’ve seen it confirmed that the Jakku action sequence is the only IMAX sequence in the movie.

Then based on IMAX digital at Lincoln Sq, it will not fill the screen on the sides nor will there be any expansion that way for the whole movie. There will be a vertical expansion in the IMAX scene, but still will be some empty space on top and bottom of screen.

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy and In the Heart of the Sea at this IMAX, and they used the same expanded image vs. a typical 2.35 film (for parts of Guardians, and the total of Sea), but still were windowboxed.

How was SW7 framing? Did it fill up the screen left to right? Was the falcon desert scene the only thing that wasn’t 2.39? Did that fill top to bottom?

moviebuff82, I believe only the 70mm version of TH8 is shown in this theater, currently.

Watched the SW7 here today and saw the posters of the finest hour, deadpool and divergent. Seems like they are going to show these three movies from february to mid march, but how can they install the laser IMAX before BVS? :((((((((((

Giles
Giles on December 19, 2015 at 3:29 pm

also IMAX-laser has no ghosting unlike IMAX 15/70 which is sporadic but does happen time to time.

waterguy56

Does AMCLoews LS13 have the biggest IMAX screen in the country? I know certainly not the biggest in the world.

Giles
Giles on December 15, 2015 at 12:39 pm

audio is completely different though – depending on how it’s mixed: 70mm could be 5.1 (split surround) 3.2 (1) (baby boom / mono surround) 5.0 (1) (five front – mono surround). IMAX-laser can accommodate up to 12 channels of sound (four speakers in the ceiling).

Seeing a demo of IMAX-laser with 15/70 shot footage (‘Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol’) though really was eye striking – inky black levels, highly detailed sharpness

Both are equal, waterguy56.

Which is better, 70mm or IMAX laser.

Per Deadline Hollywood, The Hateful Eight will play in 70mm here (along with the Regal E-walk and previously announced Village East Cinemas). Obviously won’t be in the IMAX screen, but wonder if it will be in the Loews which is the biggest of the regular screen, or one of the smaller theaters.

So disappointed that even New York City doesn’t have one decent movie theater. Wish there is one here like the TCL chinese theater in Los Angel or the one in Sydney which are so beautifully designed from outside and equipping with the best IMAX inside. Come one NYC.!!!!!!!

i agree. You mean laser, ridethectrain. Batman v Superman will probably have legs in its imax run before Captain America Civil War kicks off the summer movie season. I think the atmos screen will show Star Wars in better projection than the imax as that movie was mixed in Atmos.

I’m disappointed with the upgrade, but still seeing IMAX their because its slightly bigger than downtown. The RPX is a ripoff at EWALK, the screen is not as big as the AMC ETX/NOW PRIME EMPIRE.

Also, the basement projection is poor. I flat film is letterbox top and left and right. When they went to 4K in 10-12, the screen doesn’t project as big. That’s strange.

Can’t wait for lesser.

No laser IMAX for 2015 has been confirmed.

A woman who works for IMAX did say it “should” be in for Batman v Superman in late March 2016 when asked on Twitter and there has been buzz about it being as early as end of January, but I’d wait to see an official announcement about laser beginning construction/re-opening date before I fully buy anything at this point.

Im gonna see the hunger game, in the heart of the sea and SW7 here. any news about when we can get laser IMAX at this theater?

moviebuff82
moviebuff82 on November 14, 2015 at 1:57 pm

I Agree, amcbayplaza 13. Mhvbear, this is a popular location since most big movies open here before they roll out nationwide. As for the food they sell, it has changed a lot since it opened in 1994 given the eating habits of the moviegoing public. The ticket prices, the same. My advice for the moviegoer who needs to drive to the city, take the trains and buses as parking near the theater can be as hard as trying to find a space at Yankee Stadium or MSG.

I’m just praying God that the AMC doesn’t get rid of the original gensler design if they do the place is gonna looks like the Modernize AMC Theatres and liemax

Loews would not of let it get in such a shabby condition. It is one of the top money making sites in the country.

theatrefan
theatrefan on November 12, 2015 at 8:11 am

Do they still have the original seats from Nov 94 in the rest of the auditoriums? I know the Loews Auditorium did get a seating upgrade in the mid 2000’s. I believe Irwin Seating Company was the main supplier they used in their 90’s projects. This place does need a refresh, but I hope they do not get rid of a lot of the Gensler Design details that went into the look of the lobbies and auditoriums, otherwise it will wind up looking just like any other modern AMC with no unique individuality whatsoever.
