Saw this the other day while on a bike trip and sent in pix to Cinema Tour. The cool marquee is still there, but empty. Awesome tilework/mosaic poster holder.
The office on the main floor is the State of CT, Norwich Parole and Community Services office and the corner office is the State of CT Dept of Revenue Services. In the rear around the bldg at the back of the parking lot is the Norwich Vet Center for pets. There’s a sign in the back way up on top of the stagehouse with a stairwell leading fro the lot way up to the stagehouse door. (Streetlevel behind the theater.)
Stupid me, I forgot to post about this the other day. I was on a bike trip and snapped pix (emailed to CinemaTour). It’s the Jewett City Pharmacy. The marquee is still there but empty of letters and “STATE” is still above it.
2 poster holders are on either side of the exit doors. There’s a drop ceiling but it’s spacious inside. The owner says the back offices are where the stage house is, but there are no remnants of the original theater.
I was on a bike trip the last few days and passed by this place yesterday. Cute. Turns out they are under construction and will be open shortly. When you call, the answering machine just says hi and that’s it.
There’s a store on the corner as part of the building called “The Cosmic Cat” (tarot, etc) and you can access it from the lobby.

I did find a large book of maps from 1909 that had very exact parcels of houses and businesses. The Casassa was listed and I snapped some pics.

I have great shots of the marquee AND the stagehouse of the theatre. This was virtually impossible on the traditional photos I’ve seen of the Capitol, so now I know what it looks like. Nowadays, of course, it’s the parking lot behind DaSilva Realty and across from Cousin Larry’s Cafe.
Even though the City Directory says they closed in 1959, I have picture proof that the stagehouse and lobby remained safe and sound until at least 1964.

The last film shown was Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, according to Danbury historian, Bill Devlin.
The drive-in opened Sept. 6, 1949. The capacity expanded to 908 cars at one time.

From the up close view of the Capitol that I have, it says “New” just above the Capitol sign. Therefore, it was also known as the New Capitol Theatre.
Somehow, “Prominent” and “Multiplex” do not belong in the same sentence.
