I had a pen pal send me Olof Ekström’s book Sommardansen in Swedish, which I still have and have never been able to read because I don’t speak Swedish. It showed “Dónde andarán nuestros hijos”, Mexican movies “Así se quiere en Jalisco” with Jorge Negrete and María Elena Marqués in color, “Ella la inolvidable” with Lina Montes and Luis Aldás, 1942 Argentinean movie “Adolescencia” with Pola Alonso, “A Date with Judy”, 1948, with Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Powell, and every year on Easter Sunday, the Mexican film “La vida, pasión y muerte de Nuestro Señor Jesucristo” of 1942 with José Cibrián. I remember in the candy counter at the entrance in 1950 they sold Adams two-piece gum boxes for 2¢. It was demolished or collapsed.
I don’t believe there was ever such a theater. Cinematograuho is not a word, the Fausto was at Prado 201 y Colón, the Negrete was at Prado 207 y Trocadero. It is shown on the street map on the east side of Prado and Animas; #210 would have placed it on the west side of Prado between Colón and Trocadero. The Casino Español was at Prado 302 and Animas. González ends in a z. It isn’t listed in the telephone directory of April, 1958, nor in the 19th Annual edition of the Cuban Cinematographic and Radial Annuary. The Payret was at Prado 507 between San José and Teniente Rey, the “Capitolio” at Prado 563 between Teniente Rey and Dragones. What did open in 1908 was the Gran Teatro Tacón (later Nacional) at Prado 452 y San Rafael.
I saw 1972 Italian film “Hermano sol, hermana luna”, there in the spring of 1983, with Graham Faulkner, Judi Bowker, Valentina Cortese and Alec Guinness.
This theater opened on December 30, 1949, the property of Senator Alfredo Hornedo Suárez, with the name Blanquita, after his second wife, Blanca Maruri, with Lou Walter’s production “From New York to Paris”.
This movie theater had a small arched portico, it was across Infanta from the Quinta de los Molinos. I remember seeing “The Black Hand” with Gene Kelly there on my birthday in 1959. A candy vendor sold French burnt peanuts down the aisle at intermission.
This movie theater was located between Gral. Lee and Lacret streets. It was cozy, my very favorite as a child, especially in winter, and only 20¢. I remember seeing Virginia Mayo, Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman movies there, with Harry James, Dick Haymes, Tommy & Jimmy Dorsey, “Leave Her to Heaven” with Gene Tierney and Jeanne Crain. In the evening in summer they opened a small window high on the east side to let the breeze in. A stand on the portico of the Café Cristal next door sold the best “fritas” ever.
