The curious thing about the Englewood was that its concession stand also opened up right on to 63rd Street. The smell of the popcorn surely enticed people to buy some while waiting for the bus.
I often wondered what ever happened to the Harvard Theater. Now I know. It was located across from St. Bernard’s Hospital. It was a very small theater. I only went there once, in 1949 or 1950. I saw “Last of the Mohicans.” I wish someone had a photograph of it.
It’s not just neighborhood lore. I heard Hope state exactly that on the old Johnny Carson Show back in the 70s. It was at the Stratford that his career really took off.
