Ret. AKC (NAC) CCC Bob Jensen, Manteno, Illinois commented about Venus Theater on May 6, 2012 at 6:34 am

Built in 1926, and showed movies till 1961, became retail, but don’t know how long it was abondaned before being bought in 1999 by Imani Community Development Corporation, Imani means faith in Swahilli, and the Development Corporation is affilated with the First Baptist Church of South Richmond. It is located in the Manchester Historic District, and Hull Street was like the second downtown. The Theater, a three-story mixed residential and commecial structure and two small single-story vacant retail structures have had had a $7.9 million “historic rehab” done to them making 68 apartments and first floor retail space.

It is a two story Classsical Revival-style building faced with cast stone and columns defining the bays. There is a stone horizontal superstructure with “VENUS” carved in the frieze and carved stone medillions below the cornice.

CT would welcome photos, past and present, inside and out, and more info.

Ret. AKC (NAC) CCC Bob Jensen, Manteno, Illinois commented about Bellevue Theatre on Apr 20, 2012 at 5:04 am

The Bellvue was built in 1932, had a balcony, marble foyer and deco-pattenered borders.

The Lyric Theater had the Old Dominion Barn Dance a popular country music, “Grand Old Opry” type radio show in the 1940’s and 1950’s, till the Lyric was torn down. The Bellvue had the NEW Doninion Barn Dance hosted by WRVA from 1957 to the late 1960’s. The show had Johnny Cash, June Carter, Hank Williams and a young beardless Willie Nelson as guests.

RVA Studios now has a recording studio in the theater and along with Samis would like to restore the theater.

Anyone have photos, old and new, inside and out and more info?

CSWalczak, that must be an old photo. Thankfully the stud lighting has been restored. I’ve seen it on with a number of bulbs burned out (it must be a pain to replace them) so I’m not sure how often they turn it on.

To see a photo of them on, go above and Click on VIEW ALL 308 COMMENTS, go to the bottom and Click on “Box” 7, go to lostmemory March 1, 2007 that has the photo.

To see a great view of the theater Click on Google Map, Click on Enlarge, make sure it’s on Satellite. The theater is just about straight South of the Red A. It has a curved driveway in front of it. As you Click the + it turns into “3D”.

The theater is not really on D Avenue, but on “D” Avenue which does not map.

Any have photos, both inside and out or more info?

I sure few in and out of this air station.
