Okay heres some self-promotion or “plugging” (as we say in showbiz):

I actually supply Boulevard Drinks at 48 Journal Square (a few doors to the left of the Loew’s Jersey) with their Orange, Lemon-Lime, Lemonade, Grape, Fruit Punch, Pina Colada drinks. I recommend all of you enjoying a nice hotdog here and washing it down with one of my delicious beverages. Spiro is a good guy and a great customer…buys a lot from me too and I appreciate that in these strained economic times!

Seriously though nothing can be better than watching a cinema classic at the Loews Jersey and then walking about 10 feet away and enjoying a hot dog and a drink.I have done it plenty of times myself and enjoyed it each time.

Borrowed from /theaters/1381/

Also known as Loew’s Paradise. This Grand Concourse movie palace still stands. Plans to restore are in limbo. The organ console is now at the fully-restored Loew’s Jersey on Journal Square in Jersey City, NJ.

Speaking of Roger Anthony’s Dec 25 2003 7:16pm posting:

Back in 1997, me and my friend Joey were going to open up a nightclub at this location: “The Double J Lounge”. I was in negotiations with the real estate broker. However my friend’s financing fell through. This has been the norm, as far as our business ventures go: finances usually are non-exsistent…we’re both working-stiffs. The moral of this comment: Starting any business requires sound capital and responsible financing prior to beginning the licensing procedures.

I remember seeing Pulp Fiction here. Back in 1999: I seen South Park in mid-august with no air-conditioning,that theatre was hot as hell.

As a little kid in the early 1980’s, me and my mom would take the A train out to see our relatives, who at the time lived in the Ocean Village houses at Beach 60th Street/Beach Channel Drive in Arverne-Rockaway Queens. Then when we got there Me, mom and all of the relatives would pile on the bus and go to see a movie at the Surfside Twin.Rockaway at that time still had an amusement park, shortly after crack burst upon the scene, that amusement park closed, the whole peninusla of Rockaway went on downward crime-driven spiral.

This was the theatre that my mom would take me to every Saturday afternoon back in the early 1980’s, we would smuggle in our own potato chips, pretzels and soda…the red-vested clad ushers would never search my moms Associated shopping bag…we would take the subway a few stops to the Steinway Street station and then walk down Steinway Street to 30th Avenue the theatre…as a little kid it seemed like a long walk. The four blocks were very long. There was a chinese restaurant (now a gothic cabinet craft) across the way and sometimes we would go in for some lunch before beginning our personal film festival. We would buy one adult and one child ticket and sneak from movie theatre to movie theatre, at that time it was 4 theatres, 2 on the top floor and 2 on the ground floor. We would get there at 1pm and leave at around 10pm and then head back to Greenpoint on the G train. The last movies… I’ve ever seen there were End of Days and American Beauty….coincidentally they were both in the ground floor- left theatre closer to 30th avenue, when seen.R.I.P UA Astoria Sixplex.

The exterior was featured in the backround of The French Connection as the Rio Piedras Theatre. This was the first Brooklyn area scene right after the opening sequence in Marsailles. Gene Hackman was dressed like Santa Claus and Roy Scheider was dressed as a hotdog vendor, they had the Oasis Bar under narcotics surveilance. Anyways the marquis of this theatre can be seen in the backround as their suspect flees down the block.“Have you ever picked your feet in Poughkipsee?”

I ate the worst Ribs ever at the Kansas Fried Chicken located on the former theatres ground level. They were covered with a disgusting sauce.

In the early 1980’s this place became a skating rink called Laces. My father was hanging out here in 1983, when someone got stabbed.I think they closed soon after that incident. Then the next thing that opened here was Liquidators Arena in 1984 (think of a mega 99 cent store). I did actually manage to get up to the upper levels, which were the balcony seating for the old Meserole Theatre. I remember the seats were maroon. Then in about 1990, Genovese opened up and has been there ever since.

Hi Warren,The theatre is near Meserole Avenue. Meserole Street is located in Williamsburg.Alot of people don’t realize that there is both a street and avenue.

In 1995 a scene from Sleepers was filmed there, that was where Rizzo’s brother was headquartered. They filmed the exterior and interior during this portion of filming.

I used to sell The Commodore their delicous Fruitpunch and Orange drink. That was in the Big Squeeeze jetspray machine on the candy counter…but besides being a vendor I was also a loyal patron, I would be there every weekend catching that $6 double-bill. I first went there in January 2000 with Next Friday..then the last time I was there in June 2002, I seen the last movie ever shown there Men in Black 2.In July 2002 we picked up our machine and said goodbye to owners Arthur and Angel.I really! really! really! miss that theatre, I had a personal connection with that theatre…during intermission they would play doo-wop over the loudspeakers..I am sad!

The whole theatre was never demolished. Just gutted it became a Roy Rogers until they closed, then it became a Burger King, then Popeyes Fried Chicken opened there also.As of today its just Burger King at this location.Littke do people know, there was also an upstairs section to the American Eagle theatre (the Chopins former name). That upstairs section only accessable by stairs, was used as a bingo hall…when I was a kid, me and my friends would carry shopping carts up the stairs and roll them down.Somewhere after the movie closed down, the bingo hall closed too.Currently there is a polish nightclub there: The Exit.

Back in 1983, DC Cab was playing here for about 2 months.
