NYozoner commented about Bill Alderman's Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 4:51 pm

@Mike: Yep, I spotted it. Nice story, but not my definition of what qualifies for a drive-in. For a little town out in the boonies, I’m sure it was a fun thing to do at the time. More of a lawn gathering.

In my book, if they didn’t have a permanently constructed projection booth and screen tower with a ramped parking area, it was not a real drive-in.

NYozoner commented about East Buffalo Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 4:42 pm

@Andy: Drive-ins.com has a 1958 aerial of the 28th Street Drive-In, which apparently used to be where I-4 intersects 28th St.

E 12th Ave & N 28th St, Tampa, FL 33605 will map to just south of the location where the drive-in used to be. I would have liked to view a larger aerial photo with more surrounding features, in order to positively identify the location, but unfortunately Earth Explorer does not have the 1958 aerial set available.

There is another drive-in about 1 mile east of the 28th Street Drive-In, at E 10th Ave & N 42nd St, Tampa, FL 33605, which Drive-ins.com also has a 1958 aerial of. Using that aerial photo, I have been able to positively match up the location to the address, but I do not yet have a name for that particular drive-in. Drive-ins.com mentions 6th Avenue Drive-In as a possible name, but it would be nice for someone local to Tampa to confirm this.

Both drive-ins were short-lived inner city drive-ins which I am sure were advertised in the newspaper, and would have been open in the mid-late 1950s.

NYozoner commented about Beach Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 8:53 am

The drive-in is visible on Google Earth using historic aerial imagery.

There is another drive-in nearby at W 10th St & Avenue U, Riviera Beach, FL 33404 which I have not been able to name as yet.

Here is a 1968 aerial photo of the unnamed drive-in, courtesy of HistoricAerials.com.

Possible names are Riviera Drive-In and Roosevelt Drive-Ins, from Mike Rivest’s site, but I have no way of knowing which is the correct name for that location. Hopefully, someone local to Riviera Beach can provide the answer, or one of the Florida guys can hit up the library and dig it up from newspaper microfilm.

NYozoner commented about Melbourne Outdoor Theatre on Jan 29, 2011 at 5:39 am

Drive-ins.com indicates this drive-in was on US 192. Also, the address in the heading maps to the location of the Brevard Drive-In in Eau Gallie, which is not in West Melbourne.

My suggestion is to use “U.S. 192, West Melbourne, FL” as an address, until a more specific address is found.

The above address maps accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is visible on Google Earth with present day imagery. The address currently in the heading is off by about 1,000 feet to the south.

The road which runs behind the drive-in, parallel to US 17, is called Theater Rd, probably as a fond reminder of when all the neighborhood kids used to sneak in from the back of the theatre.

NYozoner commented about Sundown Drive-In on Jan 29, 2011 at 3:40 am

There was a drive-in near Buffalo, NY, that lasted for only 3 months! The Nite-Way Drive-In opened in August 1948, then closed for the winter by mid October. A January windstorm knocked down the screen, and they never reopened. This drive-in was also notable in that they advertised the availability of AM radio sound, in 1948! Did people even have radios in their cars then?

This website contains more information about the Nite-Way, I’ll check to see if it’s already been added on CT, if not then I will see to it personally.

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is currently occupied by Doubletree Hotel Tampa Westshore Airport.

Here is a 1969 aerial photo of the drive-in, which had already been closed for several years. The screen tower facing west is clearly visible, as is its shadow. It appears to have been a very small drive-in.
