It was a furniture store at one point. This and the other 2 movie theaters in downtown Silver City have been in various states of use, shutdown and disrepair for decades. The Silco has been fully renovated and showing current features for several years now.

A Billiken is an Eskimo carved character, pretty popular trinkets in Alaska back in the day. Most people who live there now have probably never heard of them.

The University Center opened in 1972, anchored by Safeway on the North end and Pay-n-Save on the South end, it was expanded in the 80s, with the University Cinema added to the south end in the mid 80’s.

As far as I know the former theater space is now used by University of Alaska Anchorage for classrooms.

Saw the original Star Wars there in 1978 (I think it was second run, buck flicks, or something like that)

Great shots Ed, Thanks! I remember going there many times as a kid in our ‘67 Saab, with the speaker and heater hanging on the window. Classic, and definitely an “only in Alaska” theater experience.

I think the last drive in movie I saw in Anchorage was “Enter the Dragon” at the Sundowner.

As soon as Cinema treasures gets their photo system up and running again I’ll post it. in the mean time, here’s a link to the aerial photo of Canoga Park Drive-in circa 1966.

It was indeed on the corner of Canoga and Srathern, it stretched back all the way to Owensmouth. I have an Aerial photo of it from 1966. I’d much rather it was still there than the business park.

They tored down the Topanga Theater building today (Sep 19, 2007).

As of 7PM, the front of the building remained intact (probably to keep a “pretty” face aiming at Topanga Plaza overnight) But I imagine they will level that first thing in the morning.

Anyone who worked there in the past will no doubt recognize some of the pieces of upstairs dangling from the few remaining girders.

If you want one last chance to see it before it’s all gone, you should drive by in the morning, otherwise next time you see it, it’ll be flat as a pancake
