40 years ago tonight, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO’S NEST had its world premiere at the Granada Theatre; presented by the Chicago International Film Festival. I wasn’t there but I heard the house was rocking. A packed auditorium in a giant 3400-seat North Side movie palace, Irv Kupcinet appeared on stage and introduced Jack Nicholson to the audience. Milos Forman was there as well. The audience loved the movie. This movie would go on to box-office success and 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture of 1975. It is a 1970s classic. I wish I was at the Granada Theatre on that historic night. It must have been epic.

Played this flick for 26 weeks at the Loews Crescent,Nashville,Tennessee.After that it played 3 more weeks at the Loews Melrose and Madison theatres.

I mentioned earlier at the Chicago International Film Festival of 1974 the had the world premiere of One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. Jack Nicholson, Louise Fletcher, and director Milos Forman arrived right where the white van is in the picture above. A huge waiting line went from the ticket counter to the far left, down the street. Gene Siskel was there, and very to himself and grouchy, and he was with CBS. I talked to the CBS people about employees I knew there and no one bothered me as I stood in the position left of camera. The limo arrived, they stopped and sat still. I came up to the glass and communicated through the glass using funny sign language about how great they were. They must have had drinks as they all found my behavior very amusing, I got a Nicholson toothy smile. They got out and went toward the entrance except for Jack, who adjusted his suit and looked southward…I could see his charisma. Anyway, I had the good fortune to have a pliable Jack on my hands. We talked about his travels, the film, etc. I got an autograph, using a notebook I was fortunately carrying. I put my hand on his shoulder and thanked him. We then walked into the entrance. Believe me, boys and girls, I will never forget the GRANADA THEATER.
