This is another Theatre that was Grand in its time…..i noted it closed in 59'…….so i must have been very young back then when my Mum & Dad as a Family travelled by car to see ‘The King And I’ I have vague memories of it…..but the Theatre was Grand!………….

A great decision The Woodville Council made in making The Woodville Town Hall ….Heritage Listed….What a pity The Adelaide City Council…of long ago, didn’t make our Iconic Theatres…Heritage Listed!

The old Woody Pictures or Woody Flicks as my brother use to call it….was grand even to a 5-9yr old as i was, when my Parents would take my brother & i on a Friday night… in the 50’s,i still remember quite well, the Foyer with its Dk Brown leather couches, rich carpet leading up the stairs, beautiful Chandeliars….many Families all gathered in the Foyer…the Ticket Box on the right as you would walk in………. Saturday…..my brother who was 6yrs older than me had to have me tag along with him as we walked the 20min. something to the Woody Flicks, for an afternoon of ‘Flash Gordon’ or ‘Cowboys & Indians'or some film on Pirates. We would sit downstairs halfway & my brother’s friends would throw down Jaffas or money to buy more….what fun & memories i have of the rolling of Jaffas on the wooden Floorboards!

Finally i have found the Cinema i remembered as an 8yr old, as my mum had taken me to see ‘South Pacific’. I was sure this Cinema was in Twin St nearer to Cox Foys & entered from old Rundle St as it was back then……perhaps someone may be able to remember if was entered from Rundle St or was it Grenfell st…i thought is was on the right side of the Lane when entering…. The City had many wonderful Cinemas…like Churches & Hotels [Pubs]!

I totally agree with PreserveHistory12……….

I have such a good memory with some of Adelaide’s wonderful Cinemas or Theatres as they were known. I can remember queuing along with the rest of the eager teenagers back in 64' to see ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ & looking around at how Grand it looked with that huge looking Eagle looking down on everyone…………. Does anyone remember the ‘Fresco’ on the Ceiling…absolutely beautiful! I get annoyed when i think how our wonderful Theatres have been destroyed to make way for so called progress….around the world….UK London eg. USA etc have kept some of their wonderful Treasures [ Theatres]for all to see for future generations…….. Shame on Adelaide……just a mass of glass, sterile looking & boring…. My dau. came back from UK & said London was great & saw some wonderful Theatres that hadn’t changed & she said now i know what you were talking about in regards to Adelaide’s old Theatres………………………..

I was born & raised in Adelaide from early 50’s so i’m sure i had visited as a child but cannot remember ‘The Rex’……. There is another Cinema that is not listed & cannot remember the name…..perhaps someone out there can…….it was around the corner from Cox Foys in Twin Street….it was on the right side & was on an angle…i can vaguely remember my mother taking me there to see'South Pacific'….that slight curve in Twin St is still there near to Rundle mall as its called today.

Most wonderful meemories of this magnificent Theatre., as a child saw ‘Snow White’& many other Films i remember on entering the Metro, the large square rubber Tiles in Black & Yellow with a cut-out pattern. The large morrors with Gold Frames, everywhere was opulance! My last memorable memory was viewing ‘Mad Dogs & Englishmen'Joe Cocker i was 21 back then & when the Metro was going to be transformed into a couple of Boxes called Cinemas you knew these Grand Theatres were doomed! Some of these should have been Heritage Listed………..
