An original photograph of the Regal restaurant taken prior to opening. Designed and decorated by Eugene Mollo, transforming a long narrow space into a comfortable modern area, The main ceiling support beams have been covered with fibrous plaster and then hand blocked in a foliate design, with plain fluted sides. The pendant light fittings are contained within the depth of the coffered finish. Either side the plaster detail has been given the look of a curtain pelmet, therefore giving the impression of extra height. Visitors eyes are drawn to the dramatic effect of a Dias at the far end for a Trio, the art work represents an explosion of various Jazz instruments, a design repeated along the right side wall alternating with mirrors. The specially designed carpet which is fitted throughout the Regal gives an air of modernity, this same designed carpeting was used at the Sister Regal, at Walton-on-Thames. Mollo was well known in the trade for his cinema restaurants and many would not seem out of place today. Of my top ten cinema restaurant designs, this ranks as number two!!!
