The theater seems to be in constant peril. Every two years the lease expires and the newspaper runs stories of it being on the verge of being bought out by a neighboring boutique or winery. Luckily this hasn’t happened…yet.
Saw Raiders of the Lost Ark on my parent’s wedding anniversary, Empire Strikes Back, and Ghostbusters twice (the next year on a double-bill with the premiere of Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure) here.
I saw many movies here as a kid in the ‘80s – Goonies, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Kurosawa’s Ran. Beautiful walls with twinkling stars and inlaid images of gold miners.
The Chris Farley film “Black Sheep” had a scene shot here, and gives a pretty good sense of the grandeur of the lobby.
