I lived near this theater growing up in the late 70’s and early 80’s in North Hollywood.

I remember seeing the original DAWN OF THE DEAD when it first opened in 1979. The best thing about it was that the ushers and popcorn counter girls were all dressed up like zombies (fake blood and white face paint)! It was great!

I also remember seeing the original HALLOWEEN here. I was very young and I got so scared that I ran out of the theater and wouldn’t go back to watch the rest. My mom had to take me into SKATETOWN U.S.A. instead.

A couple of years later (i think in 1980 or 81), they showed MANIAC there. I begged my dad to take me and they wouldn’t let me in since it was “No One Under 17 Allowed”. I was probably around 8 or 9 and i started crying. I wanted to see it so bad. The box office people probably thought i had problems… a little kid having a tantrem cuz i couldn’t see MANIAC!!! We ended up seeing COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER instead. On a bathroom break, i tried to sneak into MANIAC but got caught. It was pretty funny.

The best thing about the UA was that they showed so many differen’t types of movies… from Blockbusters to seedy little exploitation flicks.

THOSE WERE THE DAYS!!!

I loved going to the Americana in the early to late 80’s. They always showed double features of really bad (but great) horror flicks. Some movies I remember seeing were:

SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE
FORBIDDEN WORLD
BEYOND EVIL/DEMON RAGE
GALAXY OF TERROR
PIECES/XTRO
NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET
GRADUATION DAY/NIGHTMARE
WOMEN’S PRISON MASSACRE

It was such a great place to go see movies!
