I just stretched the photo with my android. This is 1965 or 66 cause the theater sign reads James Bond in Thunderball. If I’m right ,this was a black theater. I remember driving by it going down town with my mom when she went shopping. I see the theater marquee and it was advertising ,Dear Bridget. It would be torn down to make wave of new buildings.

Boy, do I get confused I thought it was 1970 it was open. Now I remember more clearly ,1967.Me and my mom and my brothers ,I don’t remember my sister going with us she was born a year earlier, went to the opening premiere of this drive inn movie and saw divorce American style. The drive inn was viewed as more of the modern style ,compare to the jet drive inn and Montgomery drive inn and fair view drive inn. We went there many time before it closed down.I remember seeing airport. The fourth time seeing that’s entertainment part 1 with an old Jerry Lewis dean martin film that had Corinne Calvert and Betty Hutton as a guest star. It was fun going to that theater.

Boy !were the screens so small. Even in a huge theater. One would have to sit real close to see the movie better. No wonder in 53 sizes like one by sixty-six by one to one by eighty-five by one was viewed as huge.

I think this was the theater where I saw beneath the planet of the apes in 70 when I had visited my grandparents, who now had lived in Columbus Georgia. The size and shape of the theater looked exactly the way it looked inside.

Every time I had visited my Grandparents up there when my parents would take us to the movies we go to the Bradley. I had noticed that movie theater was a few feet down and got curious about it cause they were showing x rated movies. It was called the Rialto art. By the time I visited my grandparents in 71 they were showing a Frankenstein movie, Die Frnaknstien die. I had a chance to see the theater, but, my Cousin wanted to see another movie another theater so I never got a chance to see how this small theater looked like, until recent old photos show in a restoration, obviously for its own sake. Still unused.

I remember back in 1971 when I had visited my grandparents who now lived up there. I originally wanted to go to the downtown Rialto theater, which cinema treasurers and Georgia has forgotten a downtown theater very small that normally showed x rated movies were showing Die Frankenstine die, normally when I visited my Grandparents I and my dad would go to the Bradley up the street. I was curious about the Rialto cause it was showing x rated movies. By the time I came back, it was showing GP rated horror film. I wanted to see it, but, my cousin wanted to go to the plaza theater to see walt disney’s scandalous john. She won. Well, I was surprised that this theater was exactly like the Montgomery mall theater in Mont ala, alao an Ultravision theater . The same type of 146-degree screen, like Cinerama and stereophonic sound, in fact, the same movie that premiered in Georgia premiered at the one where I lived in august 70. The Brian Kieth film was projected onto the curved screen. My guess was a blown-up from 35mm Panavision and at the end of the film had auditorium audio effects, simulated stereo audio music.

When I began to take trips to New Orleans, back in 96 is when I went to it as an adult theater, to enjoy consenting adult entertainment.T he last time I went to that theater, a year before it closes, the manager it into a double theater, For one price you can go upstairs and downstairs to see double feature up stair and double feature downstairs . The downstairs auditorium had two big t. v.’s and one big screen in the middle. A year late it became a pawn shop or jewelry shop. I do have a picture of it too, but, I don’t have disc copy to upload it to show you. I think I got before and after. I will have to check.

When I lived in Texarkana from 58 to 63, I remember me and my mom and my brother would go to that theater a lot.I remember going to the popeye buddy club Saturday morning show.Isaw House on haunted hill, Abbot, and Costello’s Jack and the bean stalk, flat version of house of wax.I also saw the regular feature, like the day of the Triffids. I remember sneaking into the balcony that was closed .Seeing the second time Cleopatra, we saw it in Shreveport earlier.I had confronted segregation when I saw a black ticket lady on the left side of the building, for the balcony seats.I was wondering why there were two ticket stands. This was in 60 or 59.I’m glad it was restored and fixed up.I had assumed they might have made it into a multiplex, but they didn’t or torn it down.I’ve seen the website .the auditorium is beautiful than ever before .

What you called the joy we had called it the new joy.I had seen the v.i.p.’s and fell asleep until it was over.I also saw it’s a mad, mad, mad, mad world too in that theater too.

I remember when the Montgomery mall open, this was way before this theater open. They kept on advertising that it was going to be open in the Montgomery Mall.It was misinformation. It opened the Mall building. I remember the grand opening of it. This was the first time seen a theater with 146 degrees curved screen and stereophonic sound, since Dallas texas at the melbas Capri, when I saw How the West was won.It was not a three projector theater with 70mm, but 70mm only.Although in 73 a single strip version of this is Cinerama was reissued, it never played here.In the grand opening, it included a short to demonstrate ultra vision 70mm. It was kind of a single strip short version of this is Cinerama-style type film, at the time it got me dizzy at some of the scenes, Unfortunately, they had premiered a small screen boatnecks. It wasn;t until I saw Paint your wagon in 70mm and stereophonic sound that I experience the whole wide screen. I finally saw the 70mm Cinerama a version of Patton with it stereophonic sound when it was reissued hear a year later, It was played in Panavision and mono at the Paramount theater know Davis theater.I also saw the 70mm premier and stereophonic sound American graffiti mere too. I saw it a year earlier in small screen and mono at the the Martin Twin.I also saw the prmeire of star wars in 1976 in mono sound, since the theater did not have Dolby, but it fills the huge screen.I was sad when it made into a twin .I did see for the first time the 1976 reissue of it came from outer space and the creature from the black lagoon in 3d, but, it was not Polaroid. It was in anaglyph process.I had thought this was the way real 3d movies were.I sure enjoyed that theater in it’s earlier form.

Before the fire in the early 70’s, the snack stand was in the middle.I would see the James Bond movies up there. Reissue of the sound of music.I also saw My Fair Lady and the greatest story ever told.I also remember seeing the cut up porn back in the early 80’s, before it was raided, by D.a Jimmy evans .I think for sneaking in an uncut version of Debbie does Dallas.I also finally heard their stereophonic sound system when the reissue of Fantasia was held in 1977.I was too young to see Flesh for Frankenstein in 3d and the stewardesses in 3d when it was played up there, but, I wanted to see it.

This was before Dolby. It had a loud hissing sound in the stereo effects.I also saw Angel in my pocket and big Jake up there too.I also saw Dr. Jeykle and Miss Hyde too.

This picture is the l wrong location .Rember seeing it when ti was an insurance building, I could not believe it could be a theater cause it was small. The back had the left over exit door. My dad ran a business at Frank Leu building in the early 71.My dad claim that the owner tried to sell it to him. He told me that the screen was big as 4-bed sheets I would explore the ex-theater building .My dad told me that the bathroom was downstairs.Years later the building was a Chinese all you can eat restaurant.I went in there and the bathroom downstairs was sitll existing and being used .I don’t know what it looked like as a theater. No pics, but, it could have had stadium seating, dug from the ground to make it bigger. An ex-friend told me when he went as a kid he would take a stick to fight off the rats,

Way back in 1967 My mom was going to take me to this Drive-In theater to see Joy in the morning,a reissue. But all of a sudden she changed her mind. The next day I saw in the newspaper, Jet drive in the raid.It seems that there was a seconf feature, by today’s standards would be r rated, Inga, Back then it was shocking. When I read it clearly, although it was rated adults only, it was self-rated by distributors. It seems that under 16 years of age minors were in the drive-in theater, was the reason it was raided. But that was stupid. Why an adult movie as a second feature to a family one ? parents were going to take their kids.
