Opened on January 11th, 1956. This was the first stage/screen program since the Roxy resumed the policy for the 1955 Christmas holidays with “The Rains of Ranchipur” as the film. Stage shows were dropped in September, 1953, when the Roxy switched to presenting CinemaScope features only, starting with “The Robe.”

This was Sonja Henie’s first and only stage engagement at the Roxy, but her B&W musicals for 20th Century-Fox had often graced its screen from 1936 into the early 1940s.

Must have been some show. Lifting up the giant semi curved CinemaScope® magic mirror screen and keep the ice cold on the large stage.

This ad brings back lots of memories as I was fortunate enough to have attended one of the performances and recall the “Pink Champagne” and “Hawaiian Fantasy” numbers. Sonja at 44 was indeed “Queen of the Ice”.

One of Cinema Treasures' write-ups states that the Ice Show starting on January 12th was Sonja Henie’s “new” show, and that is correct. Her first Roxy show was in December, about the 15th. That first show was what defeateed Arthur Wirtz' show at Madison Square Garden. J.Johncock on October 16, 2013
