The World originally debuted as the Strand Playhouse in 1915 with 1,300 seats, 12 boxes and lavish murals from Greek mythology. In 1930 the theater was taken over by the Publix chain and renamed the State. In 1958 it was again modernized and renamed the World, opening with “Ben Hur” in Cinemascope.
