STAMFORD, CT — The Avon Theatre is due to reopen this month, according to a report in the Stamford Advocate.

The theater, which closed down in November 1999, was originally opened in 1939. A $1 million renovation has made this cinema look better the new with refurbished seats, new carpets, and much new equipment in the booth.

Here are a few recent photos I took of the Avon:

Cute Theater, awkward proportions though.

My mom always took me to see The Christmas Spectacular in New York City at Radio City Music Hall. The architecture and overall feel of the Avon theater always reminded me of being at the historical landmark. I was sadden when the theater suddenly closed in the late 90’s. Now that it is open again I will make it a point to come and re-visit an old childhood friend ;–)

My 2 favorite movie houses were not great looking in any terms. The Grand and The Graham in Brooklyn NY .They held special memories for those who attended there. The exteriors were special.Interior were square halls with seats.
Big screens that opened the world for us kids at the time.I wish I had a time machine so I could enjoy them once more.

Born in San Francisco, in 1943, I was blessed, to experience,

films shown, in all the widescreen formats, Cinerama, the most thrilling, 3-D in the Great palaces along Market Street. What a thrill. The art deco theatres were my favorites architecturally. Thanks for the fine photos of the Avon in Stamford, not far by. I will certainly pay it a visit, thanks to you'
Kindest Regards, Ron. E.
