AMC lowers prices on Manhattan pre-noon showings

posted by DFC on July 17, 2006 at 5:22am

NEW YORK, NY — AMC theaters has instituted a policy of $6 morning showings at their showings at their Manhattan theaters in NYC.

Some lucky Manhattan moviegoers got a huge surprise with their popcorn yesterday morning - $6 tickets.

“I’m in shock; this is fantastic,” said a smiling Danny Rivera of Greenwich Village, who stepped up to the ticket counter of the AMC Empire 25 on 42nd Street and learned that two tickets for “The Pirates of the Caribbean” would set him back only $12 - not the $21.50 he was expecting.

All AMC Theatres in the US are doing this.

Los Angeles most theatres except the prime locations (Century, Burbank, Universal, Santa Monica, etc) are $5, prime locations are $6 and Montebello is the sole $4 matinee theatre in Los Angeles.

$6 a ticket? For one movie? In my childhood, thast would've been highway robbery! I remember arguing with the manager of the LOEW's MAJESTIC because I felt $1 a ticket was too much for a double-bill that included "King Kong Vs. Godzilla"! (Some of us remember when $1.60 gasoline was considered high!!) However, there is even a better solution to the movie admission situation-Connecticut's "secret"-the Barkhamsted PLEASANT VALLEY DRIVE-In, where TWO first-run features are always $7!-For those of you who haven't yet decided which "blockbuster" to see, this week, they are featuring BOTH "SUPERMAN" and "PIRATES", and, with the money you save, you can buy hot dogs and sodas!

In response to AMC's AM Cinema, other chains in the Chicago are chicago are doing the following:

>> Millwaukee beased Marcus Theaters have a Early Bird Special in which admisson is $4 shows before 1:30pm on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays.

>> Kerasotes (Springfield,IL based) (simular AMC's AM Cinema) which is $5.00 before noon on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays at all Chicagoland theaters except he Rivertree Court and the Showplace 8 in Vernon Hills.

>> A few years back Cinemark had an early bird special in which the admission was $3.75 before the first show Mon-Thurs. Hopefully Cinemark does consider bringing this back.

As far as AMC's AM Cinema, admission is $5.00 (before noon on Fri-Sun and Holidays) at all Chicagoland Theaters except the Randhurst, the Ford City 14, the Norridge, and the Chicago Ridge in which the admission is $4.00 (before noon on Fri-Sun and Holidays).

Also, watch out for mis-priced shows on www.movietickets.com for amc's am cinema.
I tried getting tickets for Snakes on a Plane at River East online, only for the site to tell me that tickets are $7.50, and not 5. But the box office's prices were still $5.
