The State opened as the Arcade Theatre in the early 1930s. It was said to be separated by the nearby competing Texas Theatre only by Gus’s Popcorn Shop. If you go by the addresses in the ad that would make the State at 209 E. Louisiana and the Texas at 213 E. Louisiana. Probably not true, but there it is. The Arcade was purchased by the operator of the Texas Theatre and nearby Pope and converted it to the State Theatre.
