Any number of drive-ins hosted church services, but the Aircadia took it a step further with “Cowboy Church.” The First Methodist Church started it on Aug. 13, 1967 to serve guests in town for the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.
“This Sunday the riders, who will serve as ushers for the service, will be Methodist members of the Range Riders. They will use their cowboy hats to receive the offering from the congregation seated in their automobiles. … The ministers also approach the pulpit on horseback.”
As late as 1978, the First United Methodist Church was continuing Cowboy Church as a three-month summer tradition. Ushers were still on horseback.
