Would you like to see George Lucas film the last 3 episodes of Star Wars?Newer: How many movie theaters do you visit regularly? Older: What's the most amount of movies you've seen at one time? (Show all) YOUR COMMENTS
I think he's learned to leave well enough alone thanks to the response to the prequels. Enough is enough.
I remember hearing about the supposed "third" trilogy that was supposed to be set after the original Luke Skywalker-Han Solo trilogy way back when "Empire" and "Jedi" were being made. However, I've since read interviews with Lucas (who, it seems to me, likes to play revisionist when talking about his great space saga) where he denies having ever included a third trilogy in his plans. The understanding I have is that the saga was never intended to be more than the 6 chapters we currently have. Given the overall quality of the most recent films (the Anakin Skywalker trilogy) I have to say "Thank goodness for that!"
Ed is right. When the first Star Wars was released, Lucas said the original 3 films were the middle part of a trilogy. He later denied this, and said he only intended to make 6 films. The latest trilogy has left me cold. They are great eye candy, but the story leaves me wanting.
For those interested, the original trilogy is going to be reissued on DVD, in their original theatrical versions from 1977, 1980, & 1983. Lucas says it's because of "intense consumer and fan demand". These are the versions of the original, un-CGI sweetened films that Lucas said "would never be released on DVD". F*^%ing liar! Talk about squeezing every last drop out of the sponge!
Let me be the first to say that I believe, for the most part, George Lucas (and others of his contemporaries) are waaaayyyover-rated. The graphic effects are undeniably well-done, but effects do not a good film make-I believe the storylines, music, characterization, plotlines, and evey conceivable element of these films were far more enjoyable when they were understated in the films of the forties and fifties that inspired these modern-day space operas. I'm probably in the minority nowadays, but I'd rather sit back, relax, and watch a replay of the Flash Gordon serials or a film like "Fire Maidens Of Outer Space" then watch STAR WARS on the big screen.
had they been released in thier proper order, I might say yes, but all the last three did was to confuse allot of people who never saw the first three.

For what it's worth, I remember running a trailer for the original Star Wars during the run of World's Greatest Lover (a perfectly forgettable film), it came with the print. People whooped and booed the trailer! Little did they know!!! Star Wars may be best remembered ( at least by projectionists) for being the film that put Dolby Optical Stereo on the map, (although there were MANY Mag 70mm prints as well, oh those were the days, but that's another story) I remember being amused with the concept of OPTICAL stereo, having run only magnetic prints up to that point, alot of us thought it was some kind of gimmick that would disappear, and if Star Wars had been a bomb the idea may not have taken off as quickly as it did! The rest as they say is history, Dolby was one of Hollywood's better ideas and advanced sound technology farther than anyone thought possible at the time. As far as some more Star Wars films? I dunno, maybe George has taken that idea as far as it can go, if he can come up with a great story and script, who knows, but I would hope he wouldn't make another one just for the sake of doing it. But you have to admit, his special effects are pretty neat!
I just think Lucas has forgotten how to deal with and direct actual human beings! He seems so preoccupied with the visual effects and his digital cameras, that he forgot to elicit any emotionally honest or grounded performances from his actors in any of the last three films. Only the villains Ian McDarmaid and Christopher Lee came off with any sort of memorable presence in Episodes I, II and III. And it's not like Lucas never had the chops... this is the man who directed the wonderful character driven comedy, "American Graffiti" in 1974. The original "Star Wars" was a wonderfully fun and jaunty throwback to the action flicks of the 30's and 40's (a concept he and Speilberg pushed even farther with the Indiana Jones movies). All those great old fashioned wipes that transitioned from one scene to the next really added to the sense of nostalgic fun. What happened to that looseness? Watching "The Phantom Menace" was about as enjoyable as taking a chemistry exam. Perhaps Lucas should have handed over directing chores on these films as he did with "Empire Strikes Back" (probably the best film of the lot) and "Return of the Jedi". As an old "Star Wars" fan, I must admit there was a certain amount of cathartic relief in watching Yoda battle Count Dooku in "Attack of the Clones" and seeing Obi Wan face down against Anakin in "Revenge of the Sith"... but, please, no more.
I think he should do the last 3, it only seems right, watching 3 newer movies and going into the later series with older movies seems odd.
So yes, I love Star Wars and want more!
What is everyone talking about? We have seen the last three Star Wars movies. There isn't anymore to the saga, according to Lucas. This poll must've been suggested by some Generation Y-er... ;)
Okay, for the sake of discussion, everyone should remember that Lucas wanted to wait until the visual effects technology caught up to a point where his 'vision' could be realized on the big screen. After Jurassic Park came out, it seemed that technology had reached that point. Then the prequel work began, which brought about what we have seen to complete the saga. With the saga coming out in Digital 3D starting next year, perhaps, we are waiting for perfection and mass installation of this cinematic presentation. If the saga rerelease does well, perhaps that will be the impetus for him (or a specially Chosen One) to continue the saga. For me, I'd like the story to go far back, before the prequels, to the time when Yoda was young. There is a lot of expository background to the Sith and the Jedi that could make for some great storytelling if done right. On the other hand, there could be some interesting developments after the end of Return of the Jedi. Perhaps Luke and Leia are not the last in line who have high midichlorian counts and are strong with the Force. Leia and Han probably will have tied the knot and probably will have kids and the Jedi line may continue. Maybe the Emperor has developed a new type of clone high with midichlorians to keep the Sith alive..or manipulated another female or others to achieve the same goal, too..lots of possibilities. For all the blogged sentiment on this site, and elsewhere, about how bad, or at best, poor the prequels were, the bottom line is they made lots of money. People went to the theaters to see them, people purchased the DVDs and people still buy the Star Wars related merchandise AND there is still a strong worldwide fan base. May the saga continue.
I could go for one more- as long as it is not as bad as the Phantom Menace.Could not stand Jar Jar Binks, but the chariot race...eeeer make that the pod race was ok.
I am looking forward to the 3D installments, specially Episodes IV to VI, but for me, no further adventures are needed. Lucas should move on. Star Wars is done. It doesn't matter much whether 9, 12 or 20 episodes were "originally conceived". Put that all that amazing technology to work into something fresh and new. Preferably with films that include the concepts of good story and character development.

Once this star wars crap is over with, then George Lucas will die a happy man and a legend.
I don't want to see him film these last 3,as much as I would like to see him team up with Johnny Knoxville,to make 3 more episodes of Jackass.
I'd be interested, although not ravenously so, to see a "what happened next" followup--not necessarily an entire trilogy, though. A single movie might do just fine. Frankly, after the prequel trilogy--which managed one watchable if flawed movie ("Sith"), one occasionally involving one ("Menace)", and one absolute bomb--my interest in more "Star Wars" is greatly diminished. However, if Lucas could maybe ally himself with, say, the creators of "Firefly" for a "Star Wars 20 Years Later," that might just be worth seeing. Regardess of the vehicle, I 'd like to see him collaborate with writers who can actually write and directors who can actually direct!
I certainly agree with several of the comments made by responders regarding the poor narrative quality and abysmal character development in the Episodes I, II, and II. Only the computer- generated imagery sustains them. Perhaps if he would promise to hand over the dialogue writing to talented people, I might be interested in a follow-up to Episode VI. One reason that Episode V was so good (even though it was in a middle spot in the sequence) was the brilliant writing of Lawrence Kasdan. As Dirty Harry once said, "A man has to know his limitations."
I thought he already did. Don't tell me it's not over. That would be horrible
Is everyone forgetting that Star Wars was the highest grossing picture of 2005, taking in more money at the box office than all of the Oscar nominated best pictures combined (in excess of $380,000,000)? Yes, it was not high art.
Yes, it is not as good as episodes IV,V & VI. Yes, we've all become less and less impressed with digital effects. However, there is still an amazingly large audience for Lucas'space opera. This audience pays to go to theatres, which keeps theaters open. Let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. If Lucas can pack them into the theatres, he should continue to do so. It's good for the theatre business. Possibly better for the theatre business than all of the pretentious or sopohmoric Hollywood product that we see today. Until someone else comes along, Lucas and Speilberg are the greatest showmen of our time.
Until they die, they will still live and make decent movies like Revenge of the sith and munich.
To Jodar:
Everyone who was alive and kicking for the OT (Original Trilogy) knows that Lucas said himself that his long term Star Wars plan was for 3 trilogies/9 movies. I believe Lucas made that first announcement upon the release of Jedi back in 1983 (were you born yet?). That is why these rumors still persist and will (probably) never ever go away.
To Chris:
I do recall it being published in Time magazine that Lucas had penned a 9 part saga, back in the 70s(would would mean I was born prior to 1983...check my postings on this site to confirm my cinema treasured experiences ;). The Star Wars movies we have seen have the elements of that 9 part saga, so to suggest in this poll that Lucas "film the last 3 episodes" is ludicrous as Lucas, himself, has stated that the feature film saga IS OVER. One can hope that maybe he would be hit with some kind of inspiration to go back to it, but for now, in 2006, it is history, finished, FINITO!
The only thing happening in star wars is the upcoming tv show.
A pity there wasn't the choice on the order of "Yes; if nothing else, it would be interesting to at least see a 'good story' come to its conclusion.'" Still, this is a call only Lucas can make...but then, one never knows, do one?

There is so much I could venture to say on this topic, much of which has already been said. As something of a Star Wars fan myself, I wrote a prequel trilogy of my own (which in my immodest opinion was rather better than the actual Episodes I, II and III) during the "wilderness years" between Return of the Jedi and The Phantom Menace.
When I heard that Lucas was going to stop the saga at only 6, I started writing the final trilogy, as other fans have also done. It is not difficult to achieve. If a decent writer like Lawrence Kasdan or Frank Darabont is given the project to work on, and if Lucas passes his legacy over to someone who he trusts, there's no reason why there shouldn't be a decent, well-made final trilogy up to the standard of the original three. My basic thesis is this: how can you have TWO trilogies? The whole saga is meant to be a neat trilogy of trilogies. If Indiana Jones 4 can be made, then Star Wars Episode 7 certainly can, and should.
Never say never. Remember: this is the same George Lucas who said 2 years ago that the original uncut versions of the Original Trilogy would never be seen again. Then came last week's DVD announcement!
Seems like he moves in whatever direction the wind blows to me. I'd give it a 50-50 shot of us seeing Eps 7-9. Like I said, Never Say Never...
Nooooooooo! ;) I hope they clean up the original trilogy, otherwise we will have substandard editions that will look pretty awful, with all the scratches and color fading. And what of the soundtrack? They were converted to digital, now does this mean we're going back to analog with all the hisses, pop and whistle of the previous Dolby tracks? Actually, it might be better since I cannot duplicate the whoosh and whooomph (opening shot of the TIE fighters with the Star Destroyer backdrop) of the 70mm 6 track mag stereo Empire print I saw so many years ago in the theater (KB CInema, WDC).
For what it's worth, I recall a Lucas interview in one of the sci-fi magazines - can't remember which one - somewhere in between "Empire Strikes Back" and what was known back then as "Revenge of the Jedi". The possibility of 9 trilogies was discussed. The droids would have been the only characters to appear in all 9 episodes.

Why would GL release an "unclean" version of the ORIGINAL Original Trilogy? Makes no sense. The shots will indeed be cleaned up and the sound - as already announced - will be Dolby 2.0 (instead of 5.1).
I respected the films, but think enough is enough.
WHEN IS THE ADD A PHOTO GOING TO BE BACK ON LINE!!!!
For those, like myself, who saw the Star Wars trilogy back in 1977 to 1983, seeing the original trilogy the way they in the movie theatres is a really excellent moment. You don't see any of the 1997 or 2004 changes that were made.
The only reason Retun Of The jedi's name was changed from Revenge Of The Jedi was Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan, which was origally called the Vengance of Khan. |
