Originally known as the State Theater, this theater opened September 21, 1928, with almost 950 seats and a Wurlitzer 2 manual 8 rank pipe organ. Philadelphia theater architect William H. Lee designed the theater. Other theaters Lee designed which are still open include the Majestic in Gettysburg and the State in Easton, PA.

In the 1940's the State was operated by Warner Bros. Circuit Management Corp. In 1961, the ticket booth from the Park (aka Hanover Opera Theater) was installed, the original seats were replaced with new seats, the auditorium's walls were covered with sound proofing fabric, and the theater was renamed Hanover Theater.

In December 1986, the theater closed and was sold to antique dealers. Purchased in October 2007 by a private group of individuals who are planning to restore and reopen the theater as a performing arts center.

The Hanover theater sits abandoned and neglected. It's beautiful marquee falling apart. I heard it's all gutted out inside and was once an antique shop and or used for antiques storage. It's got an awesome box office out front. Don't know when it closed-maybe around '81/82. Such a shame-the town is really booming.

Finally some good news about this abadoned movie palace. It has been purchased by a group of people who have the intent of restoring it to its 1928 splendor for stage productions and movies. Their web site has all the information. Good luck to them! Hanover PA is a great area. http://www.hanovertheater.info/

According to the website, the first phase of renovation is already underway, which is correcting basic structural damage. Here is another pre-renovation photo:

This is great news- I hope it is as much as a success as the Gettysburg Majestic and the Carlisle. Both had fantastic renovations and are terrific venues.

The photo that I previously asked about the date of the photo appears to be the same as this photo which is from Aug 3, 2007.

Anything further on the renovations and a projected opening date. Their web site has posting with the progress as late as Aug. 2008 but nothing since or an opening date.
